Guest krescent
you may remember me from my last post asking a few questions and then deciding that i'd hold off on the V8 conversion. HOWEVER, i spent the weekend with my dad and put my V8 240 proposition on the table..and at first he didnt want to, saying how hard it would be etc. (my dad has done plenty of V8 swaps into other chevys and fords and such, but never converted a datsun str. 6). then i showed him some of these forums, and the JTR website, showed him the mounts you need (as soon as he saw them he yelled THATS IT?!?! heh) etc. and in the end said...you wanna do it? ok, i'm in well the funny thing is, between the first rejection and me talking him into it, we went on a website chevy long block engines new (i believe its www.amerspeed.com and there was one other one with a bunch of FAST ZZ's) and he was like "oh man sean do you wanna build a 383? thats the one u want..we can build it and put it in a vega or something" and soon after that, i recieved a private message from Turbo Meister saying his Z is a "home made 383 twin turbo" So basically guys, this post was to inform yall that like a lot of other people on this forum, i'll be starting my conversion soon too. there are still some restoration parts to buy, and i'm going to my dad's this weekend to buy a spoiler and anything else we have time for. My cousin has a Z(either a 300zx or 280) sitting at his grandparent's house that he doesnt want (he has an NSX and is set lol) so we'll also be stripping that for small things we need. That's about it, but i do have a quick question. As i have found many websites selling crate 383's and 350's, and built ones (with 600+ HP)..i havent really found any websites selling transmissions, except for one that focused on newer imports (91+). Does anyone have any suggestions for a transmission on a 383 240z? would it be best to just find an old camaro transmission (as i know a lot of you have hehe)? thanks again, sean

I wouldn't do body work before the swap. Things get dinged and damaged. My cousin has a Z(either a 300zx or 280) sitting at his grandparent's house that he doesnt want (he has an NSX and is set lol) so we'll also be stripping that for small things we need.Man I hate you. Learn what kind of Z it is and remember there are Zs and ZXs and 280s come in both. and if you got a 280 and you are putting in a v8, there are no compatable parts from Z to ZX.That's about it, but i do have a quick question. As i have found many websites selling crate 383's and 350's, and built ones (with 600+ HP)..i havent really found any websites selling transmissions, except for one that focused on newer imports (91+). At 600hp you are gonna need either a THM400 (a 3 speed you could probably pick up at a junk yard) or a built for power 2004r (a 4 speed found in some pretty powerful vehicles, but those are not your average trannys). You'll just trash anything else. The later is probably gonna cost quite a bit. But I'm sure you can talk the old man into it because of all the money you will save later in gas milage. These guys advertise whole trannys on Ebay alot. http://www.roadmastertranz.com/home.php?specials=1 And be sure to learn all about the TV cable and get it set up properly http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php BTW if you are shooting for a 600hp monster, you will need to upgrade more than just the tranny. Like maybe the rear end. I'm not sure what the cut off point is, but I seriously doubt it can handle 4 times more hp than what it was designed for. Myabe someone can chime in with the maximum safe HP to push through a given rear end. Good luck. And I don't realy hate you. Just jealous is all. Guest krescent
oh and uh, i was going for a 5spd manual if that helps anyone..sorry should've mentioned earlier how would a ford T-5 super duty work out? link here: http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=3248&prmenbr=
Mike kZ
That would work with a Ford engine. But aren't you using a Chevy? Also it's only rated up to 330# tq. How much torque do you expect your engine to put out?
