David K
i was driving to the store and some chick flew by me on my side and hit a shopping cart splitting it into 3 peices after the cart rolled out from a shopping center. i didnt give her any crap because i saw the cart rolling down and i dont think she did. but anyway, a huge chunk of the cart flew up and busted me windshield. i am sooo pissed right now. ive started to take off the strips around the window. this will be a good time for me to get at that rust on the roof and cowl panel. screw me sideways! now i need to spring for a new windshield! Now does anybody around me know where to go? i need to get this glass installed by tommorow. also, what type of sealant shall i use? i have some caulking for indoor/outdoor use, will this be ok? Guest greimann
Dave, If you can swing it, have a pro install it. They will have the proper sealant and will come right to your driveway and do it too. Also, you will either need to salvage the trim strip retaining clips or get some new ones. Maybe the dealer sill carries them. Bond those in with the windshield.
RPMS
...and for God's sake, don't buy their crap about "these windshields don't need any sealant around them." I had a major installer do mine (Binswanger) in July, and I believed them when they fed me that line. The only time my car has been out in the rain since then, it leaked like a seive. DEMAND that they use a good sealant!
David K
how in the hell do i remove this thing? it keeps cracking everytime i try to pull it up and there is this VERY thick and tough sealant holding it in.
Guest greimann
You need a windshield knife, which can be a piece of cable attached to two rings, kind of like one of those camping saws. You saw your way through the sealant. After that is out, you have to scrape away all remnants of that urethane sealant. It is a miserable job. Call a pro and you will be driving the car tomorrow. David K
i got the windsheild out. i used a little hobby knife. i cant call a pro just yet because i have to naval jelly some of this rust and then seal it all up and then bondo it. i have to get the gaskets or whatever they are called for the window. the pro guy does not carry them. David K
somebody shoot me! update.... the car is in peices looking like its getting restored. i cant believe how much crap i found wrong once i got all the trim peices and stuff off. i bet you guys know how i feel. so far the front windsheild area is completed minus the glass itself. i have pulled the rear quarter windows and found so much gunk that it pissed me off and kinda gave me the "whip out the sandpaper, grinding wheel, and wire brush" look. ok i need my car to be on the road in about 1 week tops. i will finish this i hope..... i am not sane right now
DavyZ
Just stick with it for a weekend or so and paint that anti-rust stuff everywhere in there, then voila, have the winshield installed. Sounds easy, ha!... Stick with it. Davy
