My 300ZX Project...

Hello,

My name is Vince and I live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. About a year and a half ago I purchased my first Z car, a black 1984 Nissan 300ZX Turbo. The car had a nice new paint job, and just needed a new turbo, or so I thought. Anyways, to make a long story short, after a while because of a cam seal leak, the timing belt got oil soaked and it finally slipped and all 12 valves hit the tops of the pistons. So now I am currently working on getting the car back together, but this time I am going to add some performance back to her.

Here is a list of the things I plan to do/install on the car:

Gasket match port the exhaust on stock heads, smooth out intake runners.

Some type of aftermarket cams (probably isky)

Some type of bigger fuel injectors

Turbonetics T3/T4 Turbo (externally wastegated)

Boost controller

3" Turboback exhaust

3.90 NA rear diff.

Guages etc.

Megasquirt ECU

On the last item, the Megasquirt system. Is there anyone on this site who has acctually installed a Megasquirt system on their Z31? I would sure like to talk to someone who has done it before I take a blind attempt at it. I have above average mechanical skills, and I feel like I can do it but it would be nice to hear someone's comments about this system on this particular car.

Thanks,

Vince.

If your going external wastegate with a camshaft don't bother with a T3. Go full TO4 or anything that has alot more exhaust flow than a T3. Lots of guys run Megasquirts here.

Also I would stay away from the Turbonetics, nothing but a lot of greif reported from more then a fair share of people here with those turbos. Get a Garrett instead and be happy.

One of the members here sell them as well and you wont find a more knowledgeable person to deal with when buying a turbo for a Z.

Thanks for the advice guys. I went and had my Turbonetics turbo checked out at a reputable turbo shop here locally and he said that everything looked good and that the shaft play was right where it was supposed to be. It is a 54 trim turbo with a stage III exhaust wheel. So it's just a little smaller than the 57 trim that I wanted but it was cheap so I got it. So I guess since I have invested the money in it, that's what I'll use. Has far as the externally wastegated thing has anyone here ever done it on a Z31? I have heard that you basically chop off the egr tube flange and drill out the hole. Then you have to have an external wastegate flange welded to the exhaust manifold...correct?

While I was at the turbo shop, the owner had a exhaust housing that had the internal wastegate for 60 bucks. What are the advantages of both? I have heard that the external wastegate provides you with better tuneability, but is that really neccessary? Any and all comments would greatly be appreciated.

Later,

Vince.

you wouldn't want to run both, at all. It'd be useless, and you'd be far better off with just a properly sized external (or internal depending on your needs)

http://z31.com/wastegate/ there are some external examples for you. One guy there '84' has MS up and running on his...other than that just poke around the site

Nice examples of some unique setups. I have been to z31.com and I really haven't been impressed with the site. There are alot of people on there that think they have the answers to everything. I made a post on there about a year ago listing the stuff that I wanted to do to my car at the time and I got flammed!!! I was told that an HKS SSQV was a "ricer toy"...wtf? I know several people that run these BOV's and have great success with them. I just thought that most of the people on there were arrangant and had the answer to everything. If somebody thinks that a idea I have is not a good one, how about telling me the reasons why it's so bad before name calling?

I don't know any Z31 owners that are running MS but I know one that is running SDS and there are probably a few others running SDS. Maybe that is something to look into.

But what's the use when the 88-89 ECU's are so easy to hack?
