Lewis Maudlin
As you know, I am building an SR20DET powered 280Z. I am trying to figure out what to do for cooling. I was going to buy a griffin 1.25" tube radiator for $255. However, I found the 1.00" tube griffing radiator for $150.00. I had good luck with the Griffin 1.25" tube radiator with my 400hp sbc with air. Does anyone know which radiator would be good with the SR20DET? I found this thread from jagsthatrun.com. http://www.jagsthatrun.com/V8-chapters/V8-DatsunZ-Cooling-System.pdf These guys usually know what they are talking about. I like their nice clean mounts. The radiator is also nice and thin so there is more room for the intercooler. Will I need as much or more cooling with the SR20DET with air conditioning and a T28 turbo? What do you guys think? Will the jagsthatrun radiator work or should I go with the Griffin? The Griffin worked fine, but I got made and parted out my sbc datsun before the radiator had time to go bad. Guest PROJECTRB240SX
The SR20DET is a pretty cool running engine as long as you have good airflow. When they did the swap in my car they used a huge radiator (alot larger than really needed) and hte car runs cooler than the thermostat so the thermostat is always cycling. If cooling is a big concern I'd get the large radiator and your car will run at really cold (pending no restrictions, or faulty parts). Guest fsae_alum
This should provide you some good data on SR20DET cooling. I was one of the guys that performed the test (David Money). This test came about because a number of people in the 240SX community in warmer climates were having serious cooling issues with their SR's. To sum it up, the OEM clutch fan, SPAL, and Altima fans kick some serious butt. Ducting makes a huge difference also (and doesn't have to be that expensive). http://home.satx.rr.com/nissanweb/RadTest/RadTest.htm
Guest PROJECTRB240SX
I Had An Sr In A 240sx Also.... The Difference Is That In The 240sx The Sr Has Very Little Room Between The Radiator And Engine So It Heats Up Quick. In The Z Car There Is Enough Room To Put Another Engine In Front Of The Sr So That Help Alot With Keeping The Engine Cool. With This Swap I'm Sure You Could Run The Stock Z Radiator (which Happens To Be An Upgrade In The 240sx World) And Never Have To Worry About Heat. Guest cturbo28
I went with the Jagsthatrun radiator setup. When you buy the radiator make sure you get the mounts too. I personally like the al. radiator with plastic end caps vs. a full al. one. CT
