Dayz
Hi everyone, It seems (because I've search for the past hour) that there is a lot of questions concerning the emission test. I have to pass the smog test, here in Ontario Canada. What are the ways to help getting a quick fix to pass the e-test? I have read that: Datsun Lover : -Changing coolant, getting a hotter thermostat -Putting new oil (maybe a thicker oil) Mas 280z ...bought some Pass emisions bottle, I put 1/2 the bottle in the tank and put the other 1/2 in the engine using a vacuum line. The next day I passed without any problem Greimann 1. Make sure your EGR is functioning by verifying that the diaphragm is moving when you snap the throttle open. Also verify that the passages in the EGR system are not clogged by carbon deposits. 2. Run a tank of fuel injector cleaner or similar to get the deposits out. 3. Change the plugs, if they are old and crusty. 4. Get some denatured alcohol from the hardware store and create a 10% mixture of that and high octane gas in your tank. 5. Crank your ignition timing back to the low end of the specification. 6. Make sure that the heated air flapper valve (if you have one) that helps cold start, is closed and the motor is sucking cold air. 7. If you want to spend the $, change the O2 sensor. If not, change it if all of the above does not work! Are there any other strategies? Can you explain the ones stated above? I will try all those and hope for the best !!! Thanks guys Dayz
PeterZ
Changing the oil helps if the old oil is contaminated with fuel and blow-by gasses especially if the engine runs short distances. (The air filter breather hose sucks that in and the emissions go up.) Backing the timing off helps reduce the Oxides of Nitrogen emissions if they even test for it there. If you have a big cam I have found that backing off the valve adjustment waaaaya down so that they rockers almost fall off helps reduce the amount of valve overlap and the resulting HC emissions. Dont rev too high until you readjust the valves. Good luck.
TheNeedForZ
What car/engine are you running? Have you been tested and failed? If what others recommended does not work, as a last resort, you can bolt on a 3-way catalytic converter(removes NOx, CO, HC) for the test.
