Guest Anonymous
This kid I know just bought a 99 Z28 a couple weeks ago. Until tonight he woulda wasted me. But a friend of mine pointed out something that was slowing me down quite alot. My vacuum advance wasn't hooked up to the distributor. It really pisses me off, cause I took it to a mechanic to tune the carb and make sure timing was right. He decided not to hook that up, or even point it out to me. Needless to say, I'm not going to him anymore. I hooked it up @ 1AM tonite and went out for a spin. All I can say is HOLY S***! The car is so much faster than it used to be. I saw that kid I know w/ the Z28 and challenged him to a race. After about ten minutes, we finally get a light. I have really crappy tires (all season, 175s) and since I fixed it I can't rev up at all when I launch or I have zero traction. So from idle I get some pretty bad wheelspin, but I'm launching much harder than I ever had before tonight. All through first, and most of second I can't even see him. He passed me at the top of second, but the thing is my tranny slips in second. I totally wasted his ass off the line and through 60. I had him in the 1/8 I'm sure too. If my tranny didn't slip, it would have been a savage beat down. When we pulled over after it, he said he couldn't do good off the line because his tires were crappy. I'm like look at mine dumbass, I launched just fine. I told him about my tranny and basically told him when its rebuilt in two weeks, he's f*****. All in all, it was a very rewarding night. BTW, if something in here doesn't make sense it's cause its 3AM.
Modern Motorsports Ltd
" BTW, if something in here doesn't make sense it's cause its 3AM" Congrats BTW, vaccuum advance is for idle and non-WOT mannerisms.......it'll help your transition throttle (ie. from cruise or mild to WOT will be sharper in general) but pure WOT should be the same with or without the vac advance hooked up as at WOT you're running full mechanical and initial advance with NO vaccuum advance AIR. (ie. ie. 10 initial and 26 mechanical would give you 36 degrees at WOT regardless of your vac. can, that's why timing is generally set with vac. advance disconnected) Some vaccuum kits kick in TOO much vac advance and it'll knock on you......crane kit did that too me right off and didn't adjust down far enough....I got a neihoff vac. can for exact advance I wanted (10 or 12 AIR) prior to current EFI. Guest Anonymous
hmmm...that's really wierd. My car is DEFINITELY faster since I hooked it up. I don't think I changed anything else. It seriously hauls ass now. I went out for a couple more runs tonight. I lined up against a friends WRX and really took him off the line. But he forgot how to launch....hehe. Anyway, after that race my tranny started making some pretty crazy clanking sounds. I think I put the nail in the coffin on that one. That's cool though, cause I'm gonna rebuild it next week. blueovalz
Ross makes a good point. Also, with the vacuum hose disconnected (opened up), a slightly lean condition may have previously been the case. Yes, the vaccum hose is very small, so perhaps on top end it would not matter. Glad to here it's working better now.
Guest Anonymous
Agree with Terry, a vacuum leak will definitely cause a lean enough condition to cost you performance (assuming he just unplugged it and didn't plug off the vacuum leak). Remember to, that WOT must first pass though part throttle conditions and the vacuum advance definitely helps with that. You'd be surprised how much more power is available if you just jet up a bit fatter and make sure its not lean (or fix the lean problem). Another thing, unrelated somewhat, but if your running a holley, do yourself a favor and have someone either put it on a dyno with a AF meter, or add one, out of the box holleys are NOT jetted necessarily to your area or anything of the sort so the likelyhood of out of the box perfect jetting is a fantasy at best. Regards, Lone Ps: Lean = Mean to your pistons..
Guest Anonymous
I'm running an edelbrock 1405 (600cfm). I had a guy tune the carb, so I think it's OK. I'll check which jets are in there. It used to run rich, so I leaned it out, but that was when the timing was whacked out. Unfortunately, the closest dyno is 360 miles away. As far as I know, there's only one in the entire state of AK. Also, my car has always been a badass off the line. I regularly take my friends DSMs off the line. I don't think I can count the WRX, though. Like I said he was having a bad night. He was launching really bad. He raced that same Camaro I did and he forgot to shift and hit the rev limiter. It was the first time he did that, and he freaked out.... He's really paranoid about it because he's worried about voiding the warranty. He won't dare put a boost controller or anything else on it. I'll keep you guys posted on any more kills. I may even have some videos...
Guest super280z
well, since i've been racing mine, i've noticed that the m6 camaro's dont hook very well at all. even on DR's. im surprised to hear that you took that wrx off the line cause thats usualy the only place they can get ya. good runs though and i hope to hear some more kill stories when that tranny gets rebuilt.
