How much room should I have ?

Recommended Posts

Hard to tell how much is there because of the angle of the pic. That side of the motor will lift so I don't think a huge amount would be needed. I do remember thinking the alt. was close with the JCI kit. I'm thinking about 1.5 inches if I remember correctly. (a big if these days) Hope that helps.

Since the engine torques away from the frame, I would guess a half (maybe 3/4) inch would be about right to allow for deceleration and motor mount settling. If it drops to where it touches, a new mount or steel shim should bring it back up.

How far does your frame flex?

I wouldn't feel comfortable with 1/4" as my mounts always go soft over time.

How far are they spaced in stock Chevys?

I think 1/4" was too close too. I am moving the alternator to where the stock compressor used to be. I will be making an adjustable bracket for the alternator so that I don't have to use the belt tensioner. I should have just 1 short belt from alternator to crank pulley which should keep my engine nice and clean.
