Guest Task
I have a '81 280zx non turbo 2 seater... the motor is original and really needs to be either rebuilt or swapped. I am looking for more of a performance car.. and was thinkin about the VG30 to drop in... but a couple of things. Will it fit or does it need custom mounts? Will it fit a dual exaust under it? And finally Will it be worth it. If you have any information, Advice, or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated... Thanks ~ZaK
Pyro
For the same money and work you could drop in a late model 5.3 liter LS1. Those engines go for about 1800.00 with transmission and don't need to be rebuilt. The trick is to get a new engine/trans combo (2003 and newer) so no money is spent on the rebuild. A 5.3 liter GM truck engine makes 250 hp and 300 ftlb at the wheels in stock form. Mild mods get them to 300 hp and more extensive mods, over 350hp. The 5.7's are better but will cost at least twice as much.

A LS1 is a aluminum block and adds about 70 lbs to the stock weight of the zx with the L28. I don't really follow the VG threads, but I would assume that the problem you would come across is with lateral clearence. My impression with the VG is that it has the about the same HP as a RB stock but the RB has/capable of MUCH more torque, that is generally true comparing L6 and V6.
