Guest 73LT1Z Posted December 30, 2005 Share Posted December 30, 2005 I've got the 14x6 gold mesh wheels that came with my '75 280 for sale. I want some black 5 spoke style wheels so as to match (a couple of) my other vehicles: My 280 has the stock suspension. I found some Motegi RT5 16x7 wheels in the 4x4.5 Z pattern on Ebay for little $ (a big plus at this point in the project ). Their website lists these wheels as +42mm offset, 5&5/8" backspacing (5.625"). I'd be running a 225/50-16 tire, and there are plenty of quality high speed rated tires in this size. From doing several searches here, I'm certain they won't fit as-is. There is a lot of info here, and I have not been able to figure out how tough it will be to use these 16x7 wheels. As another alternative, the same company makes the same wheel (in silver only) in a 15x6.5 size with a +35mm offset, 4&7/8" backspacing. From measuring my car, it looks like these may fit as-is or with minimal spacers. The tire calculator says a 205/60-15 tire is about the same diameter as the stock 195/70-14. I found a few decent V speed rated tires in this size, which is one reason why I'm selling the 14" wheels. Another thing is that these would need to be painted black (which was done for the ZR-1 wheels on the TA & the R/T wheels on the Durango above). They are about $80 a set cheaper than the 16" ones. I don't have enough $ for coilovers at this time, so what I buy needs to clear the stock suspension & fenders. I'm looking for info as to how tough it would be to install the 16x7 wheels, and if it would be better to run the 15x6.5 ones. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The bolt pattern of the rims are 4x4" with a backspacing similar to the rims you want to buy. The adapters cost about $150.00 for the set. Guest 73LT1Z Posted January 15, 2006 Share Posted January 15, 2006 Went the freebie route & broke down the 255/50 tires from the stock TA wheels I had & then had some 225/50 tires mounted... and then painted the wheels Eastwood satin black (until I ran out of wheel paint ) Before: After: Simulated install: I also painted the center caps where it said "ABS" and will stick a "Z" logo decal on there. EDIT- finished product: Huge +55mm offset will require big spacers, but apparently my front struts are messed up (ride height way too high) so I'll probably go the coilover route for more clearance. They were initially quoted at $180+ $25 shipping, but this doubled after the guy figured out I had 4 lugs & was going to five. He was initially told they were for a 75 280 & the wheels were from a 95 Z28... "You people aren't listening... it's not $130' date='000...[/quote'] ... so the total price is $385 if you buy them all at once. You can check with Skulte, they are higher ($500), but include nuts. Their minimum thickness is 1.9". I found this guy on Ebay advertising specifically for 280Z adapters, so he knew the 280 is a 4 lug car. My adapters are unusable at this time since I can't find any open end nuts smaller than a 21mm socket to mount the inner part- the opening is like 22mm, and a socket won't fit in there to tighten the nuts. It looks like I'll have to buy some small head closed nuts & cut the ends off of them, which is par for this entire project. I am pretty sure these came from Pallnet... as I recall they are ~50mm thick... and they allow you to use the wheels off a Y2K+ model MAXIMA...17x8?.. I am not sure of the details... I bolted them on at "Hubcap Heaven & Wheels" here in Cary NC.... and found a huge variety of late model stock and aftermarket wheels would fit...but most required a little fudging on the offset...too much offset outwards on most ...depending on tire width and if you use flares/coilovers they really open up the wheel market... I have not jumped into making use of them on my car.. I have too many wheels already..and all the free 14" and 15" Hoosiers I can wear out...I can never get 16 or 17" scuffs... 14"s and 18"s are common.
