Guest SouthGaZX
working on getting a 77 280z (l28) running that i just bought.. first wasnt getting any power to fuel pump.. fixed that prob.. now it turns over.. sputters acts like its going to start and dies... same thing again and again.. there were a few connectors unplugged i checked the engine over and am pretty sure i have them all.. only thing i can see that is wrong is there are 2 or 3 vacuum lines on the passanger side that i cant tell where they go..also i cant hear the fuel pump prime up but i know its getting pressure because when i unhook it the gas spews out.. maybe not enough fuel pressure? also.. the throttle is not connected to the foot pedal.. would that make a difference? i have a haynes manual just not on me.. still at my moms always forget to get it. any suggestions? (guy that previously owned it says it would start but then shut off... he thought it was something to do with the intake)
innerware
How long has it been non running? It could be so many things. Obvoiusly you checked fuel. It woudn't hurt to put a pressure guage in line to check the amount of pressure you have. Also start with verifing all the easier things. Check for good spark at the plugs, check the distributer cap and rotor. Make sure the fuel filter is good, your wires aren't arcing out anywhere. Pretty much I would do a good once over the whole system. It usually ends up being something easier than you think. Your injectors could be all gummed up or the electrical connectors could be corroded so as to give a pore signal to open them. I don't think that the throttle being not hooked up to the pedal would matter. But by giving it a good tune up will be a good way for you to familliarize yourself with the car and its systems. If it doesn't fix the problem than no harm it is good to do these simple things when you first buy a car. For me it sets a level playing field. I know that it then can't be something simple I am overlooking. Hope this helps at all, good luck

Guest SouthGaZX
well the gas tank had nothing to do with it (im sure it didnt help any though) could those 2 or 3 vac lines on the passanger side keep the car from running??

Depending on how long your car hasn't run your gas could have easly have gone bad. You might even have water in the tank. Post again to see what you've found. Guest SouthGaZX
well the gas was orange in color and smelled like $h*+ lol... that is more than likely a big part of the problem.. ill drain the tank and see if that helps... should i drop it back down and clean it out?? or would it be enough to drain it and put fresh gas in it just to see if thats the problem? also how much gas does it take to get an empty tank up enough to start... 2 gallons be enough? Guest SouthGaZX
well finally got it to start! i had to adjust the distrib cap clockwise FARTHER than the slot allows... i had to unscrew the screw all the way out.. and adjust it clockwise even more... it fired up finally... ran pretty rough then after about 45 secs died. the gas is definatly not worth anything so im going to drain it tomorrow (rained a lil today and i dont have a garage yet) and refill it with fresh. any ideas on why the distrib had to be adjusted so far? cuz the gas is so bad maybe? or is the timing off.. or some other problem?
