Guest tony78_280z
Backstory... See reply #38 http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?p=607986#post607986 Is it possible to put a 305 balancer/dampner on a 350? I hear one of the small blocks are externally balanced or some such and thus the flywheel and balancer are not compatable. I can’t remember if it is the 305 or 400 that wont work with a 350. I obviously need the smaller 6.xx inch balancer and not the 8 inch I have on there now. The balancer doner is an 86 and the recieving motor is an 87-92. As I continue my interenet search I welcome advice. (I realy suck at finding information on the net.)
JMACH671
The crank on the Chevy 305 is the same as the crank in the 350, the only differance in the 2 are the bore size, they both use the same balancer. All the sbc v8's , 283, dz302, 305, 307, 327, and 350 are all internally balanced and can share the same balancer, the sbc 400 is externally balancer, thats the exception. Alf
just make sure that the balancer you use coincides with the timing cover. there are two version: driver side timing tab and a centered timing tab, each balancer has the TDC mark in a slightly different location. iv'e seen late model engines each way. wheelman
All the sbc v8's ' date=' 283, dz302, 305, 307, 327, and 350 are all internally balanced and can share the same balancer, the sbc 400 is externally balancer, thats the exception.[/quote'] This is not strictly correct. ALL later SBCs with the 1 piece rear main seal, except the LSx engines, are externally balanced just like the 400. This includes the 305, 350, LT1 and LT4. I believe 86 was the year the change was made but not 100% sure so do your own research to confirm this. Wheelman
JMACH671
Your right, all the 1986 to current 1 piece seal gen.1 engines are externally balanced and take different flexplates or flywheels, they have a smaller bolt circle "3.0in" on the rear crank flange. I thought the conversation was about the older gen.
Guest tony78_280z
Ok, now you guys are getting technical The donor balancer will be from an 86. The motor it will go onto is an 87-92 (originaly TBI now carbed) To the best of my research both are gen I SBC.
JMACH671
The 1986 and 1987 305/350 cast cranks have the same casting #'s, so i would assume that as long as both donors are either both automatic or manual transmissions, the balancer is the same. If it's any help, i'll look it up in the interchange manual for you when i get home.
