Mr.INSANE
Anyways so i have a l28e Last owner said the oil pump was broke. Later i got the engine to turn over and eventually fire up. Many people on the forums said that my oil pump was probally good. So i drove it around a little and such eventualy the engine started sqeaking. Once again i kinda got the inclination that my belts where loose. Tightened them noise was still there. So i opened my valve cover. To find the cams had metal flakes all over them. Turns out there was no oil at all and thats what caused my cams to sqeak. My engine is probally toast now. What should i do? complete rebuild? get one from a junkyard help me out here. Btw if anyone has an extra l28e and lives in california and would be willing to part with it for a fellow z enthusaists that would be great. TheNeedForZ
WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!?! Tear down the engine, if the crank journals are toast, then you can still get a L28 crank for 50$ on eBay then get all new bearings. Then you can find another complete head(unless you can find L28 spec new rockers and cam) Remember to blow out every chip in the oil passages in the block if you decide to rebuild on it. If you decide you want new L28 engine, try craigslist : http://www.craigslist.org/cgi-bin/search?areaID=1&subAreaID=&query=datsun&catAbbreviation=sss&s=100 L28 crankshaft on eBay : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/76-77-78-Datsun-280Z-Crankshaft_W0QQitemZ8039221363QQcategoryZ33616QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Mr.INSANE
So how much do you think id spend rebuilding it
TheNeedForZ
Crank 50$ + shipping 30$ = 80$ complete head 100$ + shipping 40$ = 140$ main and rod bearings 80$? (not sure, I never trashed my engine) = 300$ for rebuild, plus labour. That's eBay price, if you can pull stuff out of the wreck yard (like complete N42 head, crankshaft) then it is cheaper, and you save shipping. The most optimistic situation is that your crank is fine, local wreck yard N42 + bearings = around 150$, plus labour.

Mr.INSANE
Did i mention i had detonation in one of my cylinders Edit Mass detonation
Guest bigbadzcar99
I would hope you had detonation in all 6 cylinders, do you mean pre-detonation? like made a bunch of noise under hard acceleration? could have been just a bad plug/gap, something simple. I dont think this matters anymore, just replace everything and start over.
Guest bigbadzcar99
i forgot, i have a complete N47 head out in my garrage that i removed to do a turbo swap.
