Guest lessthanjabo
I searched, but turned up somewhat unlucky.... anway, I've been driving my ZX for a few months now, with no problems, last week however it started stalling while I was driving. I was able to get it to crank back up while I was still rolling (kinda scary) and I managed to get it home... anyway, as you can see in this pic: my fuel fitler is right behind the alternator... usually, it is full of fuel, but now there is no fuel getting to the engine whatsoever... even though I have a full tank of gas.... I am still running the old fuel pump that was with the L28E. I guess the fix is simple, but I just wanted to make sure, before I went and bought a new fuel pump? did anyone else run the stock fuel pump with their conversion? I have around 360 hp. 280zwitha383
I run a stock mechanical fuel pump on my ZX (383). Works great and it's a lot cheaper. The only upsides I see to the electric pump is cooler fuel and possibly a pony or two from the lack of friction from the pushrod and not having to pump the pump with the cam. Paint the thermostat housing!!!!
280zwitha383
Also, you should be able to hear the electric fuel pump when the car is in the run position or when cranking (assuming you haven't altered the wiring for it). I would hook power straight up to it (shows you the + and - in the manual that you can get to from inside the car pulling the foam thing, if you still have it, up and the wiring is sitting right there) and listen to it. Could be wiring and not the actual pump.
quicker240
What I cant believe is that the 70 psi coming from the factory fuel pump hasn't blown the guts out of your carb(which only needs 4 psi). You need a fuel regulator BAD,as well as a low pressure fuel pump suitable for a carb application.Good news is you can get a pump like that dirt cheap at Auto Zone.Or like he said, put a mechanical pump on it(dirt cheap also).Pull the hose off the carb, put it in a bottle, hit the key and listen for the pump.If no sound, check the fuel pump fuse, and smack the pump a couple of times with a rubber mallet(I'm serious here, dont use the ball peen!) and try it again.By the way those glass filters are resrictive as hell.If the hammer trick works, head on down to the parts store, your gonna need a new pump any minute anyway. DavyZ
If you can run a mechanical fuel pump on there, by all means do it. The only reason why I won't run a mechanical pump on my 240Z is that my engine is in the JTR position which eliminates space for one. I like mechanical pumps since they are nearly bulletproof.
