Hi from Houston Texas. I am not new to Z's but am new to the HybridZ. I always wanted to do one with the nissan vg30DET (single T not the z32 twin) in a z31. Well my friend sold me his 86 with a chevy 350 in it and I believe a 350 tubro 3 speed (no overdrive) auto tranny. Well talking to one of my friends, he said if I plan on doing anything to that motor, I'll want to go to the 400(?) turbo tranny. Well my first question out the box is I'm thinkin a manual tranny, but that means a swap. Is it worth it (knowing if I was messin with a 6 cyl it wouldn't be a question). As I don't know the potential of the 350 block.

I don't know much about this particular vehicle as I went to go purchase it (where my family lives) but couldn't drive it back to houston because of tags. Not to mention that a shimmy on breaking. Oh, and that pesky prob with the light switch needing cleaning because when I turn the lights on you see light 'til they are fully raised. Then they go out. (Where's an eraser when I need one.)

Either way, I never envisioned me owning a Z with a Chevy block in it, so now just trying to plan on what I want to do. Just getting a vibe for what's popular. What's a no no. (Basicly just travel down some roads already pathed.)

Also if there is anyone in the Houston area that wouldn't mind a new 'drinkin buddy' so I can learn a little and get some help, please feel free to hit me up. (Not to mention a trailor to get that gas drinkin SOB back to Houston from Abilene.. haha)

Thanks, and look forward to a lot of great things with my new toy....

If i have read your post correctly you said you have a 300zx with a 350 chevy small block? whatever it is post some pics we all want to see it.

the 350 chevy has huge potential as a power performer and is the most "hot-rodded" engine in the small block family. as for the 350 turbo hydromatic 350 transmission, it should be able to stand up to what the engine can dish out. besides the TH400 is heavier which is no good, they ain't cheep either.

if you decide to keep the chevy engine but want to go manual, i can help you through the swap. i have a 85 300zx with a small block chevy and a three speed stick shift.

anyway, welcome to Hybridz(the best z car site on the web), and good luck with your new toy

Thank a lot. I'm really interested in the swap to a manual. The automatic just doesn't seem like it is p ullin the potential. Hard to even tear up the tires. So gotta be something I can do. I look forward to it. Let me check out the boards so I can figure out how to upload pics, I'll show them to you.

Not yet. Not to pretty uner the hood yet though. He never got to do all the 'make it pretty' work. So I'm gonna pick up where he left off. So that's why I'm trying to learn a little about what I got so I know what I want to do with it.

Welcome to Hybrid Z. This is the best place that you could have come for info. I have an '84, with a 355 and a 350TH. Unless the tranny is weak, it should take all you are gonna give it. If you are going to change you might want to consider a 200R4 The only reason is because the 350 is a direct drive and Z31's are geared a little low. Any questions you have just get ahold of Alf or me.

Good looking car. I think the guy who had it before was on here, but I can't remember what his user name was.

Yea, when he first done the car I had directed him to this site as I wanted to make a hybrid Z with the VG30DET (not twin z32 motor for those who mistake it as) and came here to research it. He and I use to ride together when a few folks tried to create a Z club in the 'big city' of Abilene Texas. (One of those places that if ever have a chance to go.... DON'T!!! hahaha)

Either way thanks. I really hope to pick up where he left off and do some good things as he has made a great start which gives me a great foundation.
