its unlikely to work as you layed it out,

your better off getting a return line and a QUALITY ADJUSTABLE bye-pass regulator , or a manual fuel pump that is high voluum and low pressure, that varies the flow with the rpms. check the floats and settings and vacuum connections plus the power valve if your carb has one, as all can be potential problem areas

[yeah] lifes a $%^%^&&*& in that good pressure regulators are not dirt cheap, but you really need to do it correctly
