Rumnhammer
Hi all, I'm about to start the RB25DET swap into my friends 75 280z. We got the front clip home to my house tonight, MAN what a bitch!! I'm thinking next time I do this I'll be getting an engine tranny and harnness package. Will make off loading that puppy from the trailer a hell of a lot easier. The importer packed the clip on 4 pallets nailed together as a one level pallet. They did a good job, but with the pallets that far apart, it leaves all the clip weight in the center and makes moving it a pain. When i got my other friends SR20DET clip, they had it on 4 pallets too, but it was double layer and only one pallet deep, which made moving it with just one pallet jack easy. The way this was configured made it into an almost laughable ballet of pallet jack and engine hoist, trying to get this thing off the trailer and down my driveway would have been funny to watch if it wasn't busting my ***!! I think that I still prefer getting a clip instead of a motor package, but I thought it would be helpful to post this so if you get a clip, tell the importer to pack it only one pallet deep and just put it on a double layer. Anyway rant off, we pulled it off, and his rear sump oil pan arrived today too, so I can't wait to start tearing into it. Rumnhammer
I'm using your excellent photos as a guideline, since he is doing a lot of the same stuff. greddy manifold, etc. I have him buying stuff in three seperate levels of need, the first one is all the stuff to go on the engine while it is out of the car, since like you note in your pics, it is stuff that is better done at that time then later, having to do timing belt etc. Stripping the clip is going very fast, I'll have the engine out before lunch on Saturday, and likely have the remains ready to chop up and recycle soon after. He'll likely be putting some of the stuff up for sale that he won't be needing. That's one of the cool things about putting this into an old Z car, no need for the power steering, or A/C and taking that stuff off, frees up quite a bit of room. Rumnhammer
Well, I got the engine and tranny out today, the engine is now on my engine stand, and i have plenty of goodys to start bolting to it. It was a pretty full day, and I'm beat. I may start into it tomorrow. Looks really good, so far. Who ever had this car in Japan seemed to take pretty good care of it, all the fluids looked good, clutch was not overly abused, and had normal wear for the milege. Rumnhammer
After looking at the new oil pan placement I happend to notice that the dipstick after the 200zr oil pan is in place, will not be going into the bottom of the sump. There is a small plug further back on the block that if knocked out could reposition the dipstick to go into the sump, I'll have to see how doable this is when I get the oil pan off. Just thought I'd mention it since it didn't seem to be mentioned before. Other then that, the tear down is going smooth and fast. I got the Cometic Headgasket today and it is really beefy. I got the same thickness as stock, but it has a steel core, and I doubt that it will blow without the rods coming out the bottom first. Waiting on the head studs, and timing belt so I can do everything in one day. Chris Rummel

Check throughout the RB forums theres the "Dipstick Thread" I think.
Rumnhammer
Hey thanks Q, I looked again at your pics after posting that last night, and noticed the brass plug in there, I'll swap positions on it when I do the oilpan.
