Scottie-GNZ
For those of you running the 82-83 caliper/84 vented rotor combo on the front, what are your pad recommendations? I just called Performance Friction and they do not make a pad for the ZX. Looking for a good street pad that has a solid feel that will haul me down from 125mph at the end of the 1/4-mile and have good cold stopping power. This is important because I use a line-loc for burnouts and need good grip on the fronts with dead cold pads. I cannot use racing pads that require a lot of heat to grip. I also specifically mentioned "solid feel" because I also have the ZX 2+2 booster and the 15/16" m/c. Do not know if a pad can help with the feel but I would like a more solid feel. TIA. ------------------ Scottie 71 240GN-Z Scottie's GNZ
Modern Motorsports Ltd
kvrperformance, don't have a URL handy but I"ve run their carbon fibre street pad for 4yrs plus on 4 different calipers and all were v. good. May need just 'slight' heat in them, I haven't noticed it but a friend with a v. heavy domestic car mentioned that. They're VERY rotor friendly/fadefree (roadracing my car)/long lasting. I don't own shares/stocks or have any relation to them. BE SURE to follow their recc'd break in procedure and if they don't tell you ask (they often assume you know, their fault but doesn't help us out). PS I found them about same price as the crap nissan pads offered for me ride.
Scottie-GNZ
Thanks, Ross. Spoke to them, like what I heard and have a set on the way. ------------------ Scottie 71 240GN-Z Scottie's GNZ
jeromio
The 82 280ZX is a bolt on then, right? I ordered a set along with the 84 rotors from Advanced Auto. They were crazy wrong (tiny, unthreaded mounting holes spaced way too far apart) so I had them re-order. Same exact parts the second time. Should I try another parts supplier? Am I missing something? Should it be the turbo calipers instead? Anybody have the specific part number?
pparaska
I have KVR's on my Eclipse, with new calipers and a good bleed. They do need a bit of heat. The Carbotech street pads I had on before made tons of brown dust, squeeled, etc. but bit right away. I miss them when the KVRs are cold (street driving). ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
Scottie-GNZ
Jeromio, the 82 calipers/84 vented rotor is not quite a bolt-in but not very difficult. My memory is fuzzy and I would have to jack up the car to double check, but here goes. You need the 82 caliper bracket and mounting bolts for it to work. If I recall, on the stock setup, the bolt went through the caliper bracket and threaded into the spindle. On this setup, the threads are in the caliper bracket, so the spindle must be drilled out precisely for the bolt to pass through it to thread into the bracket. Once that is done, then the rotor needs to be cut down. Do not know how much. I just gave it to my machinist and VOILA. On the early Zs, a spacer is needed to center up the caliper over the rotor. In the case of my 71, it took 3 VERY THIN washers. Because the later Zs have a different size hat, I cannot say what it will take. Again, that is from memory and I know I probably should have documented it. If you want a verification, I will jack the car and double check but I am preety sure that is accurate. As for the KVRs, I tried only the fronts and can get lock up in a panic stop with the brakes cold, so they will serve my purpose and work much better when I do the rears and fiddle with the prop valve. ------------------ Scottie 71 240GN-Z Scottie's GNZ
jeromio
Yeah, I'm feeling pretty stupid for having made the parts store order 2 sets of calipers and then not buy either one. Dumb. According to Terry's write up, he used 0.16 inches of washer to shim up the caliper (I too have the early style, '71 hubs). I guess I'll try and cut out of work early one day and head to the pick 'n pull. Thanks for the help.
