Dyno Base Runs @JDMC

Hey guys, i took my Z over to JDM concepts here in Oside. Gabe and Omar hooked it up big time for me, especially with whats to comembiggrin.gif ....Well this is basically a stock 280zx motor in a 240z. My other motor is in the works and so this is my Daily driver motor for nowmwink.gif .

-1972 Datsun 240z

-280zx 2.8L OHC "stock"

-34 total degrees timing after 2500

-MSA Header 6-1, Fidanza Aluminum flywheel, Spec stage 2 clutch, SU carbs "stock", R200 4:11

126hp @ 4800

153tq @ 3700

I plan to use one of my spare cams to get a regrind for this stock head to mirror off my power band. A .460 lift / 270/280 cam should move my powerband a bit higher and make it more useful. I do realize this is an "okay " cam, i plan to use my ISKY cam on my N42 head or sell it and have a .515/300 cam ground.

Good results! A typical hp output with an extra good torque curve (maybe from the header and lighter flywheel).

A bigger cam should really help out performance.

What year 280zx engine is that? F54 with a P79 head (81 to 83) or N42 with a N47 head (79 to 80).

Oinojo! Awesome! I've been waiting for someone to dyno a N/A SU'd L28 for about 3 years now! I have a similar engine, so I've always wondered what kind of HP I would be looking at. What is your CR? Is it a stock long block, F54 with P79 head? How many miles are on the engine if its not a rebuild? How much was your dyno time and how many passes did you get? I live in Cali so I've been thinking about dynoing my Z. Oceanside might be a little far for me to go though. I am hopeing with the mods on my fresh 9.2:1 CR F54,N42head with header and 460 270 cam, 2.5"exaust, electric dizzy and SU's I might get 160 to the rear wheels.

yeah you could really tell that the stock cam was definitely not designed for top performance at all stock. Its a F54 block with a P79 head. Compression ratio is 8.8:1 and the block has 65,000 miles. The head was freshly rebuilt a month ago.

I know what you mean about NA dyno charts. Hardly anyone on this site nor classiczcars.com have any dynos posted. I will continue to get dyno runs after each upgrade from now on. Thanks for the replys guys.

the shop i went to was JDM Concepts here in Oceanside, CA

i only had base runs made so there was no tuning involved. They just got the dyno in the shop so for base dyno runs it will go for $60 for 3 runs. We know there are other shops who can do it for cheaper BUT, since they just got the dyno they're trying to pay back the cost as quick as possible to justify the dyno machine.

You can probably get another 20 to 30 HP by putting an N47 head on it. Also, a mild cam will get you more power over 5500RPM (as you would expect)

The dyno plot below is for the following engine configuration:

F54 with flattops

N47 head with stock cam

6:1 header

1980 280ZX disty and coil

Megasquirt fuel-only

You should be able to get in the same ball park with well tuned SUs.
