L26 Turbo?

Recommended Posts

From what i can work out. Would converting a l26 to turbo aplication be a reliable conversion ? And Compression ratio's in the right aspect ?

Im thinking of going this way with for my R30 with a l20et. Since l26's are more avalivle in NZ compared to a L28. L28's get snatched up quickly here and fetch big money.

Maybe its something that could be tryed and proven compared to the well over done l28 ;)

Whoohooo bfree bump :D. Someone else maybe intrested in the same thing ?

Really when you think about it everything about the L6's is the same. Cranks are mighty strong. Same with the rods. ect yada yada. A l26 has a e88 head, if might stand corrected; 8.29:1, Good compression ratio to turbo.

I currently have a l20et which i can swap all the turbo gear over onto. Sump dizzy drive ect to convert it into the right setup (no locking dizzy for me) And 270cc injectors should be enough for a L26....

My last Z was a 260Z 2+2. It had a L26 engine with an E88 head, and this engine was turbocharged. The compression was just about 8.2:1. I had no problems with that engine whatsoever. I ran about 15 psi on it with a stock headgasket. I never had it on a dyno, but the PO I bought it from claimed it produced 250hp. Not sure wether that was on the wheels or not, but the car was fast. Mind you it was a heavy 2+2, yet I managed 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. So I would think it was 250rwhp.

After owning that car for a while, I learned more about the L6 engines and the Z's, so decided to start from scratch and build something much better. Didn't really like the 2+2 chassis anyway. But had I not sold the car, I could have made the engine perform much better than it did. It had a small Rajay turbocharger, a small Saab 900T intercooler, stock 280Z injectors and ECU etc + a piggyback that controlled two extra injectors that kicked in when boost came on. Ergo, not a good setup at all. I could have swapped to a standalone engine management, upgraded to a 2mm steel headgasket, installed a T3/T4 hybrid turbo, a bigger intercooler and bigger exhaust, ARP head studs and so on, and I would have seen much higher numbers.

So there is no problem with turbocharging a L26. :-)

Good to see a good positive reply. Thanks :).

From what ive been reseaching. Most l26's were carb. And with the carbsetup the head doesnt have the same bolt pattern to suit a EFI manifold. (plus the lack of injector holes.) Can anyone prove this ? . Id like to use my already ported and shaved maifold off my l20et if this ever comes off the ground.

In my L26 that I have it HAS to be higher than 8.5:1. The previous owner told me that "internal work" had been done to the engine. I have had thoughts of doing a rear mounted turbo and sealing it up good but I think my compression is quite a bit higher than stock. I also have the E88 head but I think it is shaved a bit. I would think that with a stock head it would be fine to push less than 10 pounds on a car you don't drive much. I drive my Z about 100-150 miles a wek so it has to be reliable. I am searching now for a 280zxt and just swap everything over and do some sort of EMS and a holset hy35w... but that is down the road. I am probably going to get the electromotive distributerless ignition this summer so that I can use it on my L26 and someday on a L28et motor. I am sick of this crappy distributor. I think it is a great idea for a stock L26 to go turbo rather than doing a ton of head work to get the same power. Good Luck! just get a small turbo and mount it at the back of a regular N/A header from MSA or wherever and use low boost.
