Rear control arm cross member and hangers

I have a 75 280 and the rear control arms mount to a cross member which is attatched to two long hangers that attatch to the chassis. I believe this is the same set up that is in the earlier models. I have always wondered why they are so flimsy. Has anyone tried to fabricate new hangers or stiffen the old ones? It seems that under very hard cornering, you could get a considerable amount of flex. Any comments would be great!!!

Brian I believe the part youre referring to is called the differential uprights, I think youre right on track with wanting to strengthen it, Terry Oxendale-aka blueovalz-has a great writeup on this exact subject, his car is featured here in featured cars or members rides-TRULY BEAUTIFUL!!!-

I dont know the web address offhand but I bey its under our links section or the links found on Pete Paraskas site-another NICE car in the works.

Thgose two "flimsy" pieces that hang down are actually supposed to be hardened steel! When I bought the aluminum brace for my car it came with a pair of those already drilled as I was advised drilling that metal would be "a challenge" for the normal bit. It might not be quite as flimsy as it looks. Just got mine back from th epowder shop - looks good! smile.gif

Don't worry about them, they're stiff enough in the directions that matter. They would be flimsy in reacting fore/aft loads, but those loads are taken at the forward control arm pivots. In lateral and vertical stiffness, those flimsy hangers are very stiff.

If you'd like shoot the pic my way and I'll host it on my site for awhile.

I've just begun bolting my rear suspension back together after coating - the rear brace I'm going to run just clears my cell and should really help stiffen up the two plates in question but the foreaft loading is still not real stiff. Thankfully it shouldn't see loads like that! smile.gif For the price, that back brace is very nice even if you choose not to run a finned rear cover IMO...

Blueovals, did you draw up any plans for that rear brace assuming that you fabricated it yourself. I would love to attempt a project like that.

I did not draw up any plans, but this was one of the more simple things that was done to the car. Basically it started out as a rectangular plate held on by 4 bolts (original upright bolts). And this would have been quite sufficient, but at the last minute I added the end pieces so that I could use the mustache bar bolts too (not necessary for strength though). Very, very, simple, and the neat thing was that all the stuff that bolted up to it was perfectly aligned. But, I did have the differential mounted perfectly horizontal, just like the transmission output shaft centerline. It is important to have the centerlines of the diff and trans parallel.
