Mustang Power Steering Rack Conversion

Well, I'm taking the plunge and have decided to do a power steering conversion with a 85-93 mustang rack. The mounting of the rack to the crossmember should be straight forward. Does anybody have a source for 9/16"-18 female rod ends to use as tie rod ends?-I've looked in all my racing parts catalogs and this doesn't seem to be a standard size. This little part would simplify the tie rod fabrication greatly.

I think I've seen Terry's(blueovalz) writeup and others info on this swap. I don't want to use the stock mustang tie rods so I can use spacers between the steering arm and the rod end to adjust for bump steer.

As for the rest of the swap, I am going to use a early chevy pump, an adjustable pressure valve made by Heidt's steet rod to adjust steering boost, a aftermarket GM tilt column and borgesen U joints. This setup will be expensive, but I want the steering to be very safe and foolproof.

Any thoughts on my setup? I know this conversion will be a bunch of work, but I want to drive my car everyday in traffic, and the high effort I have now makes that a pain (I have 245/50-16 tires up front which does'nt help.

Hi Tony

One other thing I wanted to say about this is that I am using a grade 8 1/2" bolt through the steering arm, through the appropriate spacers (bump steer), and lastly, through the rod ends. A 9/16" rod end will screw onto the rack ends, but I did not want to enlarge the hole in the steering arm to accomodate a 9/16" bolt (cannot find a 9/16" rod end with a 1/2" head). In hind sight, this is not a big deal, and would do it this way instead of using the 1/2" bolt. It's just that the smaller bolt fits real good into the steering arm, and with grade 8 washers on either side of the arm boss, it was worked very well.

Thanks for the info. I will probably drill out my steering arms to 9/16. Right now the holes taper slightly, so making them a constant .5625 is probably a good idea for a through bolt anyway.
