Owen
I got the 4x4 S12W calipers and 300ZX rotors from Mike-SCCA. First problem, the pistons were siezed so i traded them in as cores for some new ones at the local autozone. Second problem, the rotor rubs the caliper mounting bracket ever so slightly. Anyone else have this problem? I don't have a spacer or anything in between the rotor and the spindle, should I? Also, are there shims for the pads on these calipers? Thanks. Guest Anonymous
I had install problems as well Did you get enough hardware with the "KIT" to do the install?. I was missing the 8 bolts necessary to install the spacers, the pins for the calipers that hold the pads were too short, I too didn't have any shims,The "KIT" didnt come with enough springy thingys. $50 dollars later and the "KIT" was ready to install. Did you get any instruction? Were the parts shipped to you done so on time? Overall I don't think I would order from him again, Peter
Guest Anonymous
Owen, Take a grinder and machine a little bit off the bracket. It should work fine after that. Hoover
Owen
The parts didnt come as soon as I wanted but I'm not dissatisfied, except for the caliper pistons which were seized. The calipers were loaded though, pad holding bolts and pads. I don't know if the pads require shims though, but easy to find out. Thanks for the tip Hoover, I was thinking about that today. One interesting thing right now, I used shims to center the caliper but, if I tighten the caliper mounting bolts all the way, the rotor seizes. If I tighten the spindle nut all the way, the rotor seizes. I think its an issue with the spacer used between the bearings, but I kept the same ones on the same axles...Is there a big washer/spacer that goes between the rear of the hub and the flat part of the strut where the spindle sticks out? I don't feel safe with that spindle nut not tightened all the way. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
BLKMGK
Hrm, if you got the same thing I did the calipers should've been NEWrebuilds. Mike gets them someplace up near him - mine were loaded and appeared to be in good shape ready to bolt on. Likewise - I got all the bolts for the spacers but I was going 5lug so it might have been different parts. Never did bolt it on though as I went to the Outlaws before I got around to it so I don't know if there was any rubbing Shoot Mike a note and he'll help you out I'm sure. I think he might be out of town right now though so don't get excited if he doesn't get right back. He's helped me out with some truly STUPID questions I've had (ahem). Owen
Actually I bought them from him as "used" but I didnt think the pistons would be that bad. Found a solution to my spacing question though, took one of my left over pipes from the rollcage and cut some slices off. I put those on the spindle and then put the rotor on. Fits great. Another thing though, I have to use spacer when mounting the caliper too. This is gonna be a pain every time I have to change pads. Thanks for your help guys, Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
Guest scca
Owen, just got back, i honestly dont see how they were seized. i took waterpump pliers and moved each piston back and they moved fine.. otherwise i wouldnt have sent them.. i squirted fluid all over the bench so i know they pistons moved... you MUST have spacers between the rotor and the hub! if the spacer is in and you cant line up the caliper to the rotor your car IS NOT what you think it is, 280 hubs are a different offset from 240. IF the rotor is too far back- closer to the strut youlikely have 280 hubs on your 240 and thats the problem .. let me know.. MIke
Owen
Hey Mike, I'm not worried about the calipers, I just wrote them off as cores that I bought from someone instead of scouring the junkyards myself. Strange how you could get them to move though. I even hooked it up the the brake lines and only 1 or 2 out of the 4 would move. Oh well, like I said, not a problem anymore. As for the spacer you mention, you are referring to the one I bought from you? Or something else? Hell, I could have 280 hubs...I had a 260 door... I made up a small spacer to keep the rotor off the strut. Owen ------------------ http://www.homestead.com/s30z/index.html
Guest scca
Owen, somthings weird there, it should just bolt on.. and no caliper shimming should be necessary.. ifyou bolt the the hub to the rotor with the spacer and then tighten the rotor up on the strut how far off is the caliper from being centered on the rotor? ------------------ Mike mike@fonebooth.com http://www.outlaw-brakes raceparts and brake upgrades. Owen
Just bolting up like you said, The caliper is hitting the inside face of the rotor. I can hear and feel it dragging. Also, when the spindle nut is tight, the inside face of the rotor get pressed against the caliper mounting bracket.
