Z-Dreamer
Picked up a Dana 44 out of an old mail jeep this past weekend from one of my accounts. It measures just under 51" from hub to hub and comes with a posi and 3.73 gears And the best part is I got it for FREE It has drum brakes but was told that there is a disk brake conversion kit available. Also, it has 5 on 5 1/2 lugs(Ford truck I believe) but can be changed to whatever. If anyone has any questions, just ask. Mark
pparaska
Wow! I think this swap should be one of our HybridZ tech articles! Please document and take pictures as you go. This ought to be pretty cool. BTW, ar the halfshafts CV or u-joint?
jeromio
Those old mail jeeps had Posi? Most axle shops will do the re-drill for the bolt pattern pretty inexpensively. Definately lots of different ring and pinions available for those. Lots of fab work to put a 4 link in there though. Curious about Pete's question - was that sarcasm? Tough to tell in text. (D44 is a solid axle, no joints).
pparaska
Doh, since it was a jeep, I thought it was IRS, since some of them (ARMY) had swing axle. Sorry.
Kevin Shasteen
I thought they were solid axles also; I new Pete wasnt being sarcastic/but I wasnt going to say anything. Z-Dreamer
Yes it is a solid axle. I decided on a solid for several reasons, first, my 72z has a R180 and while a could have purchased an R200 fairly cheap, I would have still needed an LSD, CV's and five lug conversion! Properly set-up a solid axle will perform just fine and be much stronger and easier to upgrade. I'am looking at using an upper and lower control arm suspension with coil springs and shocks or coilovers and a rear sway bar. Mark
