i'm going to do this upgrade pretty soon, so i'm jsut wondering what the costs of the calipers would be new, and also from the yard,

i know i have to get new pads, brake fluid, bend the brake lines and cut the steel cover to fit the calipers in there,

is just mineral turps good enough to clean, do i really need to get break cleaner

and also would i need spacers for my 15x6.5 wheels i might just do the change, then i'll check if i do need spaces...

thanks

i think i found the car that the front disc are from the TOYOTA HILUX P/UP 1982 - (4x4) it says was relased in 79 - 83 and has front disc... so i think thats it... if not please advice me

Calipers new = expensive.

Calipers rebuilt = $200 US

Use 1979-1985 Toyota 4X4 truck calipers.

Use brake cleaner only! Brake cleaner does not leave behind an oily residue like other mineral spirits--that's why they sell it specifically. Carb cleaner is similar but NOT the same and should not be used on brakes either. You don't want any kind of oily residue on rotor now do you? icon_smile.gif

save your $- adding a toy caliper to the stock Z rotor is a waste of time/$ IMO..

stay stock calipers or get vented dont do 1/2 of it..

what do you mean by don't do have of it

do you mean get the calipers plus get vented rotors, is there a write up about this somewhere so i can get some info on it

i can really do anything big and i am on a very tight budget, and i thought since i am modding around the engine bay, i thought that getting some bigger brakes would be alot safer, i can't afford something like the package at www.fonebooth.com/brakes_zcar.html and with the amount of mods that i am doing now won't really need that big of brakes anyhow....

i just think that the calipers would be safer, with not that much work needed and little cash

even thou i would love to get those bigger and better brakes... just an't within the budget at the moment

thanks

my point was that save your $..

spending it elsewhere other than NON vented toyota brakes would be $ better spent..

the toy non vented does not perform better than stock Z.........a stock Z will function fine until you get to the point where you are overheating the rotors- the toyota calipers are not going to improve over a FUNCTIONING stock Z brake setup.

to put it bluntly IMO this is NOT a upgrade.

What Mike said is correct. For years I ran stock calipers and rotors ('cuz the rules wouldn't allow any changes) and they work surprisingly well. You do have to do two things:

1. Take meticulous care of the calipers, rotors, pads, drums, and shoes and bleed the brakes after EVERY track session. In general, I would inspect and completely rebuild the brake system on my car every year.

2. Get LOTS of air to the front rotors. You have to build special cool cans to route the air to both sides of the rotors.

John, you get those rear disks on yet? I seem to recall you were the one finally upgrading from stock and I'm really interested to know if rear disks make a big difference over drums when you use the ZX stuff icon_smile.gif So many say it doesn't but since it would seem you visit the track a good bit you will probably know best on that...

Hey, what is the diff between brake and carb cleaner? I use carb cleaner a lot, it seems to be the only thing that can really strip off oil, etc and leave no residue (does leave a bit of chalky white stuff though). As opposed to engine degreaser which removes all oil buy leaves a greasy residue.

I agree w/ scca. My brakes work great until they overheat (which is soon and often), then they squeal like crazy. As soon as I have the funds together for doing a brake conv I'll be contacting you Mike! Thing is I want to go 5-lug at the same time with FWD offset so I need to save up for wheels/tires too.

I believe brake cleaner is made from perchloroethylene. (PCE, or perc) I think carb cleaner is methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), but I could be wrong on that one. Either one is a good cleaner, though both are harmful if inhaled.

I wouldn't use anything but brake cleaner on brakes... lots of stuff will leave a non-visable residue, that likely would just burn off quickly, but I don't think its worth the risk.

after reading some more up on it, i see what u mean and theres no real point on doing the swap, i'll be getting some new pads to help a little with fading,

thats what i was worring about the fading.

becuase after i go cruising around for about 2 hours driving around city areas, it starts to fade
