Drax240z
Did a brake job on a friends 86 Rx7 yesterday, and as we were doing it I thought that those would be awesome calipers for an early Z. (the front ones) 4 piston caliper, and the beauty compared to something like the 4runner swap is that it'll also mate with a .81" thick rotor, has around the same pad size, but its aluminum. I think it would be fairly easy to adapt to the Z strut. Has anyone looked at these calipers for this purpose? Can anyone thing of Pro's or con's that I might be overlooking? Owen
Someone I talked to on ZCAR has done this awhile ago. It seems like its just a matter of mounting them. I know, those calipers are so light! I had one in my hand walking around in a junkyard looking for an older Z but couldnt find one so I didnt buy the calipers. Owen
Dan Baldwin
Velly intellesting. I have a '90 convertible RX-7 and I just had to get rebuilt front calipers for it. They are LIGHT! Thinkin' about selling it maybe, too. Hmmmm....So maybe I could do the vented Toyota 4-piston swap, but put the Toyota calipers on the Mazda and the Mazda calipers on the Z. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm............ Gotta get through the rear disc swap first, though. Through a comedy of errors it's turned into a time- and money-consuming pain in the ass. Guest scca
big drawback..... 1) cost. finding used mazda ones in good cond.. not likely- they corrode REAL bad and will likely need rebuilding. the cores are cheap though...so after buying cores and paying to rebuild its not such a deal. 2) the bolt pattern is like 6" so no where near the z 3.5" with the hassle and such and paying for rebuilts you need to compare it to the new outlaw 2800 calipers at $125 ea, this is new not some 13 year old core with steel pistons instead of stainless.. mounting is a PITA whereas the outlaws will bolt on to the stock ears.. i looked at using the rx stuff 3 years ago as a cheap replacement but thought there were better options out there
