GLSHLE
I have been forced to put my 383 back together. It as a new top end.rebuilt edl. performer centerbolt heads with harland sharp 1.6 roller rockers, air gap performer intake 600 edl.performer carb. I bought this motor used and been fixing it eversince. I ran out of time and money to send the short block to the shop. I started it the otherday and the cam as a bad lobe,( i did brake the lifters in) Now the question, I see here that you don't think much of !.6 rollers. Should I lose the rockers and go with perfomer cam or should I get a cam for this setup. I'm broke and backing up.which is the right way from here. please help. grumpyvette
if you have the roller rockers keep them, I would NOT use an EDELBROCK cam, theres been a few quality control issues on occasion. whats your true compression ratio and rear gear ratio, trans type ETC. kuntry
Depends on why your "forced" to put it back together like it is. Is it your only transportation or what? Your best bet is to do it right the first time and be sure that its going to last. How many miles are on the short block? From what I have seen in the past, sticking a new top end on an old motor usually isnt going to last long before the bottom end starts having problems. It took me 2 years to get my engine together because I didnt want to half-ass it. As far as the 1.6's go, I like them, extra lift without having to go with more duration. I have a set of 1.6 Dove rockers for my stroker. IMO its better to have to put off the engine a little longer rather than skimp on the build. A fresh hone, new bearings and a set of rings wont cost that much, but are good insurance that your motor will be dependable.
GLSHLE
I blew my truck up. Driving my daughters truck that she wrecked and it's not long for this world. I drive 40 miles to work over a 8400 ft. car killin pass. I bought this motor used and spent every dime I could fixing problem after problem.I had no faith in the block. I was not going to put all that on a questionable block. I've had it down to the short block for 1 1/2 years trying to get the money to send it in. It's been a bad 2 years. it was my cheapest hope of a car.
grumpyvette
I mailed you a new cam/lifter set guy, this morning,I hope that gets you back on the road, don,t forget to flush the engine out, a mix of one gallon diesel and 3-4 qts of cheap oil, well blended and poured thru the engine so it drains strait out and tends to flush out the metalic dust/crud before installing the new cam is a great idea, add a new oil filter, replace the magnets and add fresh oil before starting it this time, and use lots of MOLY assembly lube on the cam and lifters, http://www.cranecams.com/index.php?show=browseParts&lvl=2&prt=15 http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/moly.html Id also use a oil like the shell or VALVOLINE oil

Guest coppergmc
I wouldn't put that engine back together without going through it again. All those fine metal particles from the cam are now stuck to your bearings. You will spin a main or rod bearing if you don't get all of the metal out. I've seen it before. Use plenty of break-in lube and 5 quarts of Rotella diesel engine oil for the cam break-in. The Rotella oil still has zinc and other additives that are needed for the flat tappet cam. Also, ditch the 1.6 rockers for breakin. Once you have the camshaft broken in completely, you can replace the stock rockers with the 1.6s. Follow the cam companies recommendations. Comp Cams has some really good info on their sight. For cheap cams, check out Summit. I like SUM-K1105 for street strokers.
