Guest Anonymous
I've got a question on tie rod ends. On the drivers side of the car, is the outter tie rod end where its connected and lock nutted right hand or left hand threads? Mine is extremely tight and its the only thing standing in my way of replacing that outter tie rod and being done with the damn thing . Thanks in advance, Lone
eugene
The threads on the tie rod end are right hand. You can always tell by looking at the slope of the threads. The nut has to follow the slope of the threads to be taken off, so just turn the nut in that direction. Hope that made sense. Put a big, giant long piece of pipe of your ratchet, then it'll have no choice but to come loose. If it's really rusted in there, try PB Blaster(much more effective penetrant than WD-40). pparaska
The Z has left and right threaded tie rod ends. Look at the slope of the threads on the inner tie rod, next to the tie rod end, as Jason mentioned.
Guest Anonymous
Thanks, I will look at the thread slope, I should have thought of that, and I'm glad to hear it has both right and left I wasn't sure as I'm not used to a rack and pinion front end really and didn't know if they were different. Most of the cars (old) I did front end work on eons ago had a drag link and tie rod ends with sleeve adjusters on them. (shows you how long ago I worked on front ends and how much I dislike working on them.. ) Anyway thanks again, I'll look at the threads and take another stab at it.. jeromio
Okay, just to be a nanny and make sure there's no confusion: the Passenger side is "Normal" threaded (righty-tighty) and the driver's side is "Reverse" threaded (turn right to loosen). I learned this the hard way. Put a big breaker bar on the driver's side and ruined the nut before finally checking the threads (Doh!). Guest Anonymous
Thanks Jeromio, much appreciated, thats what I was trying to avoid (although I did jack the locknut up a bit in my first attempt at turning it), so I thought I'd check with you guys before I messed it up totally. Thanks for the info. Regards, Lone
Guest Anonymous
Update: Thanks guys, I moved the jackstand back so I had more room and put some better light on the subject and I was able to finish the front end this morning. Amazing what you can do when you can see something and turn the bolt the right way... Thanks, Lone
