Toyota brake conversion question

Recommended Posts

A couple of questions for those who have done the front toyota break swap. Should I keep the dust plates? Also would I be better off finding vented/cross drilled rotors and if so does anyone know if Datsun offered them and what year to look for.

I have a good parts supply in All Z, a wrecking yard that mainly caters to Z people located within 45 minutes of home.

Any hints or watch out fors would be greatly appreciated as Im no break expert!!

I haven't done the swap you propose so hope you don't mind me answering icon_smile.gif

I'd keep the dust shields if possible, or some manner of keeping excess dust/crap away from the hub seals etc. Are you doing the solid or vented rotor conversion? It's been said the solid isn't so worthwhile. Too bad you weren't up here right now...I'm looking for a WA or BC 70-78 donor/owner to install my prototype 4 piston aluminum calipers/10-3/4" (Z31/same as toyo swap) x0.8" vented brembo's on......calipers aren't even a pound each I'd guess, toyo's might reach 10lbs each. It should be available fairly soon broadband.

Oh yeah, I'm no fan at all of drilled or slotted rotors FWIW. KVR pads combined with decent rotors etc will treat you far better.

Ross, Right now I have the old solid rotors from my 71 Z thats why I wanted to know if any of the newer Z's had vented or cross drilled rotors and if they were interchangable. Nice set up your talking about, boy what id give to go that way, just to pricey for me Im sure! Oh well.

Your right the toyota calipers are heavy, very heavy but in my budget. Im also in the process of doing the 200r rear swap upgrade, currently Im running a 180r 354 rear end which is too wimpy im sure as Im running a 355 Edlebrock rpm power package, 420 advertised hp. Im not so sure if I believe that as the car doesnt seem that quick.

Oh well. we will see if car stays healthy enough as something seems to break all the time. But will need better brakes if it is really that quick.

I have totally blanked out on where and when the show/autox is. Between work, the kids starting school, putting on new siding and painting my house, being a father, tring to work on my z, it slipped my mind. I am a paying but not real active member of zccw. When I get my z running I will be a more active member but I would feel strange going on events in my toyota tacoma.
