Guest Spoon
I've been going back and forth about the idea of swapping out the stock engine in my 1983 280ZX Turbo 2+2. Since its only got 60k miles on it i've decided to keep it. I live on a small island where the fastest speed limit is 55mph. I bigger engine would just get me into more trouble. Even thought I just made the statement that I did, I am still interested in getting a little better performance out of it and also dress it up a bit in the process. I don't really need it to be a racecar but a little more get up and go is never bad. since I'm new to these cars and engines I was hoping a few of you more experienced people could help me out with some ideas. Everything is original or atleast 10 years old (thats the last record that I found of anything being done) so obviously somethings need to be replaced and tuned up a bit. So the basic things seem like a good place to start upgrading. I.E. ignition, charging, exhaust, gaskets/seals, etc. Any ideas for me? naviathan
A well tuned stock Z has lots of get up and go. My 81ZX NA hasn't let me down and it pulls strong from 0-110. One of the first things most people do on a turbo is the 240SX throttle body upgrade, intercooler and 2 1/2"-3" exhaust. The 240SX throttle body doesn't help HP, but it makes the engine a little more rev happy and responsive. All these upgrades are easily found with plenty of back up information if you search on here and zcar.com.
