Guest cmeinmy280zx
Hey, gotta problem, I am trying to use a stroker crank kit on my LT1. My mechanic says that it is externally balanced and that there is no way to balance the damper that came with the kit. We tried a 400 damper but found out, too late, that it doesn't fit, because of the timing cover. (So now the crank is balanced with the 400 damper:confused2 .) Does anyone know of an LT1 damper that has weights?
wheelman
Have your mechanic balance the entire rotating assembly using a standard flywheel/flexplate and damper meant for a later SBC that had a 1 piece rear main seal. This eliminates the whole problem and is a better setup than external balancing anyway. Edit: Besides, the LT1 uses wieghts on the flexplate/flywheel for balancing not the damper. Guest cmeinmy280zx
Thanks amigos, I will pass this info on to my mechanic. It's nice to know I have a support system here. He is not going to enjoy putting big slugs of malloy back into all those holes! I wonder if I should just buy a new crank? I guess the 8" 400 harmonic balancer is going on e-bay...sigh
