FastBurn head vs brodix etc.

Recommended Posts

Not jumping on the v8 wagon...yet, but never too soon to start planning the next round! I've been looking at the Brodix track 1s (last years catalog) vs the Fast Burns availible from chevy. The fast burns, for the price seem very competitive, if not the better deal. Especially if you get the new bare models. Since they come with smallish 2.00/1.55 valves an upgrade to the 2.02 1.60s would help even out the hp potential. Intake ccs are slightly smaller than Brodix, but exhaust ports are bigger. I haven't seen actual flow rates/lift on the fast burns, but they say, out of box, good for over 500 hp. How do these compare to other aftermarket heads dollar for dollar? Is Chevy the best deal here? Anyone have current prices?

John,

I don't have the flow data for the Brodix Track 1's but here is a comparison between the GM Fast Burns and the Brodix -8 Pros@ 28" H2O:

GM Fast Burn Brodix -8 Pro

Intake Exhaust Intake Exhaust

.100 62 45 66 56.2

.200 129 85 120 82.8

.300 173 120 169 112.5

.400 209 143 212 130

.500 230 157 241 144

.600 235 166 224 150

The GM Fast Burns will obviously be a better street head as they flow almost as much as the Brodix yet with a smaller port. A good rule of thumb is the find the smallest best flowing ports available as they offer the best port velocity.

I really like the AFR heads. The AFR 190 flow data is as follows:

AFR 190

Intake Exhaust

.200 144 115

.300 208 146

.400 244 176

.500 262 190

.600 261 197

Good Luck with your decision.

Chris

Chris, thanks for some comparp. #s The track 1s out of box

.200 103/130

.300 142/178

.400 165/223

.500 175/256

.600 183/259

.650 183/262

Sorry, but what are the AFR heads? What size intake/exhaust. How much?

The fast burns flow suprisingly well for such small valves!

John,

The AFRs are from Airflow Research. Their website is www.airflowresearch.com The AFR heads come CNC ported so there is really nothing to do but bolt them on and go!!

I believe their complete heads run ~$1,275.00. The ports on the 190s may be a little on the large side for a 350 but I think they would work nicely for a 383+ motor. If I were building a 350/355 I would look closely at the Edelbrock Performer RPMs or the new Edelbrock ETECs. The ETEC 200s have some pretty impressive flow numbers and they make a smaller version, the ETEC 170s I believe. The flow data for the ETECs was not up on their website but you can send them and e-mail and they will provide you with the data.
