Bump travel

Recommended Posts

Im in the process of installing coilovers with 200 inlbs springs front and 225's rear. ? is how much bump travel VS rebound travel should I shoot for. How much for the street VS autocross and track days. Also for those out there with GC camber plates would like to know if people mounted them under or over the strut tower.

Thanks

Just a comment on the over/under issue. Unless I had a reinforced top hat on my strut I'd ONLY mount plates underneath. Simply due to the fact that if they're on top with only minor material bearing underneath (ie. 3 or 4 washers) then you can have a strut 'blow-through' the top as it no longer has the large OEM style perch/surface underneath. This HAS happened on 510's before with over the top camber plates (same bolt pattern as 280zx struts).

I'm sure GC has a rec'd method of install, the GC 280ZX caster camber plates install underneath FWIW.

for early cars the plate mounts above?

as least thats the way the instructions appear to show it. i am currently installing a set in my car. i havent even cut the top out all yet so ..

i dontknow if the plate will even fit in underneath. will have to try that....

i know that nissan comp plates mount underneath and thats the same as Design products.

i havent looked at the GC ones too much here. but they are a lot larger than the comp ones so it will be a tight fit underneath.

i have gc plates -they go underneath.you have to open up the strut tower alot.i use a sawsall and a rotary file in a die grinder to do this.my car is set up with 12" 225 front and 250 rear coil overs from gc.their (street) coil over kits use stock length struts-this is what i have.car will handle better not lowered all the way-i have proved this at sears point.most of the guys onthis site have installed coil overs to run bigger tires.my car is used for a work car so that is why i have long springs.you can tighten a car up but you will never know if it is right untill you run a race track.

Well glad to know I was on the right track with mounting them under the strut tower. The reason that I was unsure was due to the pict's of Don Bunt's E prod car that was featured in both Zcar & Sport Z mag. On the Ground control plates I must say very nice parts but really awfull instructions. I think the install would have been easier if they just sent you a befor and after photo. Now If I can just get some Idea of how much bump versus rebound travel I should have, I might be able to lick the understear demon
