John Greenslade
I am ready to start disassembly of my struts in order to have strut towers beaded and then powder coated. Also, need new cartridges and am considering converting rear brakes to disc. As I don't anticiapte doing this regularly is it easier and cheaper just to take to a shop to have disassembled. Any spring compressors I have seen either are only for cartridge replacement and not srping removal or appear to cost about US$240 plus shipping and duty. Any suggestions. I have to take strut to machine shop to remove remains of spindle pin. Tryed dones of heat with my acetylene torch to no avail.] Thanks John G
Modern Motorsports Ltd
"Any suggestions. " Yup, bring your struts down to my place in S. Van with some Xmas surprise of your choosing. I've got the compressors and air compressor to make quick work of it. Took a couple apart last week and the pins were so jammed I just airchiselled the c arms off (lastnight, neighbours loved me ) so I can play with the struts. FWIW, my spring compressors cost me ~$25US 6 yrs ago and taken apart a few dozen struts at least. Thankfully not all were done without air support. JFryer
If you had to use lots of heat to try to get that pin out. You should look at replacing you wheel bearings. I removed my pins last year to replace the bushings and had to use the melted wax trick on one pin. Then less then 2500 miles later I had to pull that stub axle to replace the bearings. I can't say for sure if the heat caused the bearings to start to fail or not. But it looks like the most likly cause.
