CruxGNZ
ShelbyZ is selling some 17x7.5 wheels and I would really love to get them. My question is, I want a 245 wide tire in the rear, and can you mount a 245 wide tire on a 7.5" wide wheel? Now, lets see if I can word this right, how much is cornering affected by running the same size tire on a 7.5" wide wheel compared to a 8" or 9" wide wheel? I'm thinking that a smaller size (not as wide) wheel will have more slop (for lack of better words) side to side compared to a wider wheel. My car will see track days, so cornering well is a must. Should I hold off and get some wider wheels? I really do need the biggest tire I can fit in the rear with the amount of power I'll be putting down to the road. I think I worded this right, I'm a bit loopy (today's my B-day!), had to wet my whistle (had a few to many Fosters) with a few buddies earlier. !M! blueovalz
A 245 can fit nicely on an 8" wheel (I had the Comp T/A 245/45 on my 8" with only about 1/8" bulge extending beyond the edge of the rim). But when I installed a different brand with the same "245" width, the 8" wheel looked a bit narrow, so I guess some millimeters are smaller than others. Anyway, I would say yes, it will mount, but you may be stretching it to do so. Tires that are too wide for the rim they are mounted to (with the exception for cantilever styles) generally have a less precise feel, especially in the transisional stages of the turn. IMHO I'd instead go for a 225 if you want to keep the 7.5" wheels.
CruxGNZ
Thanks for the reply Terry. I'm going to hold off for some wider wheels. 17x9 rear, 17x8 in front sounds good to me. What size tires would be good for the 9" and 8" wheels while still letting the fronts go lock to lock without rubbing? 245/40 rear, and 235/40 or 225/40 in front may work well, I think. Do I have the correct series? Would it be 40 or 45? Or is it my preference (taller tire?)? Just trying to get everything right before I buy anything. I am just seeing how wide I CAN go. If you can, then why not? !M!
