Guest philmagil
After pulling the stock 6cyl motor to paint the engine bay in my '73 240z, I've been having trouble getting it to start up again. I completely stripped the car (pulled the harness and everything out) and have since put the harness back in and connected almost every wire, with the exception of a few that I can't seem to find where they go. So, here's the problem: When I turn the key, the car will turn over, but unless I have the key turned it won't continue to run. Just now, I started the car up, had the key turned, and it ran until I let off the key. It idled pretty high (maybe the choke?) when I did it, but my main issue right now is the fact that the car won't continue to run unless I have the key turned. And the starter doesn't grind either when it's turned. Any ideas? Thanks guys
datsunlover
By 'key turned' I take it you mean it's in the 'start' position? And it stops if you release it to the 'on' position? But it doesn't rip up the starter?!? Maybe the ignition swith is worn, and it doesn't make good contact in the 'on' position anymore, therefore cutting the power to the ignition coil.. but by all rights it SHOULD destroy the starter if it's running in the start position... ktm
Could be a dead ballast resistor or that the resistor is hooked up incorrectly.
ktm
It's the rectangular block beneath the coil.
Guest philmagil
thanks for the replies guys, but we fixed it. That rectangular block (a resistor) is replaced by a new one, we're just going to a start button ignition set up. Thanks though.
datsunlover
we're just going to a start button ignition set up.Thanks though. A word of warning.. try to wire it off a power source that is live ONLY with the key on! Mine is not.. it's also a marine pushbutton switch, AND it's mounted where the cigarette lighter used to be. (black rubber cover, looks like a cig lighter) I had a guy in my car one day that wanted to light his smoke.. didn't say anything, just reached over and pushed it! Luck for me (and him, cause I probly would have knocked him out if it was any worse) we were sitting in a parking lot with the motor off... but it WAS in 1st gear! the car lurched ahead a foot or so, and it threw him back so he let go of the button. I really have to fix that...
