Question on V160 trans swap into an old school 300zx I have a friend that wants to put a V160 Supra tranny into his 1988 Nissan 300z turbo. The car is running 285/40/18's in the rear and has a Nismo 2.8 liter V-6 racing engine that revs easily to 9500 rpm. His car presently has a 5spd with the following ratio's:

***5 Speed Nissan

1st =

2nd =

3rd =

4th =

5th =

Diff/Final Drive = 3.7

Anyone knowledgable about gearing that can estimate how the car would perform through the gears compared to stock in the two scenarios below:

OPTION 1

***6 Speed (V160)

1st = 3.827

2nd = 2.360

3rd = 1.685

4th = 1.312

5th = 1.000

6th = 0.793

Diff/Final Drive = 3.133 (UK/US/Euro TT)

OPTION 2

***6 Speed (V160)

1st = 3.827

2nd = 2.360

3rd = 1.685

4th = 1.312

5th = 1.000

6th = 0.793

Diff/Final Drive = 3.7

Thanks

Les

Hey, toronto eh? heh heh.. Good to see another canuck on here! :) I think I'd go with the 3.133 rear end, as it's a turbo car.. although, I've never heard of that ratio.. that's a nissan rear end? And you say it's a 2.8? Now.. I HAVE seen this once (a race prepared car..) Stock 3.0L removed in favor of a built 2.8 L6 motor... anyway, I think the consensus here is that it sounds silly, but a lower (numerical) gear is better for a turbo, giving it more spool/boost.. otherwise, you go throught the gears too fast and don't get as much 'time' in a gear to make boost.

Thanks for the reply :mrgreen: The engine is a vg30 V6 not L6. nI didn't put the stock tranny's gears ratio's....its the FS5R30A (1987) below.
