Garnet blasting versus glass beading

Recommended Posts

I spoke with the shop I had strip the undercoating on my 240Z about glass beading the suspension components, half-shafts and differential prior to finishing (powder for some, primer and paint for others) and he advises he uses garnet to strip as opposed to glass beads. Says it makes a better finish for coating as is more abrasive. Any comments and how does one protect differential from getting garnet dust in bearings. I am still blowing out garnet from my body passages.

It would be fairly hard to get any thing in since the diff is well sealed. You could use masking tape or a rubberized tape around the shaft seals and precaution when the operator blasts around these connection areas. Blasting material just bounces off rubber products. Remove the u-joints. Is that personal passages or car body passages you are blowing out?

Ps: I've seen duct tape used for sandblasting before, but a guy would have to go gingerly when he got near the tape I would suppose).

I stopped at a local Rod shop here in anniston and talked to the guys about where to get cars and body panels blasted.

They told me about a place in gadsden that does soda blasting.

It`s supposed to take off paint body filler and undercoating but won`t hurt chrome glass or trim.

They showed me a car that they had done a few weeks ago.

It was a completely assembled car except that it had no paint on it.

They charge about 450. to do the entire car inside and out, top and bottom. I`m gonna take some chevelle stuff to them
