Best shocks for 280ZX?

I'm helping a friend freshen up a '81 280ZX. It NEEDS new shocks badly. This car will be part time driver and part time autocrosser. I currently have Koni Single Adjustables on my Camaro and I love 'em. We are looking for a set of good quality shocks for his car. Preferably adjustable pieces. I checked shox.com and they don't have Koni Single Adjustables for the 280ZX. Do they not make them for this car? if not, does anyone have input on a quality shock we should look into?

thanks,

Morgan

I guess we don't have an answer. I'm personally not up on shock availbility for the 280ZX. I suggest you continue the search but check directly with the shock manufacturers. Check Tokico and see if the Illumina 5 way is available for the car.

Another good source is Sam Strano at Strano Parts (http://www.stranoparts.com/). He used to autocross a 280ZX about 5 years ago.

What type of springs will you be using? For the low end you can go KYB GR2 ($50.00 a piece) or their high end units and Tokico has performance units for less $ than the Illuminas($150.00 a piece I am sure you will find availability in Tokico and KYB for the zx. I like gas charged. If you are going all out with sway bars, springs and bushings go for the adjustable Illuminas Get a catalog from MSA 180-633-6331 and Victoria British 1-800-255-0088. They are free

I've been reading a bit. and I'm leaning towards Tokico Illuminas. I have Koni Single Adjustables on my Camaro (F-Stock SCCA) and I love the adjustability. I know Illuminas will be a bit different but I don't think its possible to live without adjustability! if not those then probably Tokico Performas (non adjustable)

from Shox.com Illuminas are !$435 a set and Perfoermers ~$200 a set (give or take a bit, recalling this from memory). As far as I can tell, Koni doesn't make adjustable shocks for the ZX.

Morgan, I dropped you a note on the 15th. The Illumina's are great on a 280ZX, on the lightest setting '1' they don't control rebound as much as I'd like but at 2 and above they are a great shock for hard use and 1's tolerable for street:) I've got them on my shelf available to ship anytime.

Drop me an email if you need more info, my schedule doesn't always allow me to routinely 'check' posts here.
