JWSewell
I really, REALLY want to turbocharge my NA VG30i in my 87 Kingcab P/U. So I was cruising Craigslist and came across..... "AiResearch T04 for $250. Brand new in the box" Anyway I bought this Turbo. Real nice, real clean. BUT.... I think I may have bought a turbo that is to small. AiResearch T04 .40 A/R compressor .50 A/R turbine My goal is to have my 3000+ lb truck running 12's in the 1/4 mile. I want to build some manifolds, bolt on a turbo, swap TBI for Pathy MPI, intercooler, wastegate, BOV, engine managment as needed, Ect. Basiclly all the turbo support equipment and no changes to the engines internals. Do you guys think I am on the right track? Or Am I barking up the wrong tree with this turbo? Opinions, ideas, Flames are all welcome.
mtcookson
Yeah, that turbo is likely way too small for what you want. A Garrett T3/T04E 50 trim matches very well to the VG30E and will flow enough for around 450-460 hp. Another very low cost option is a Holset HX35. Quite a few Z31 guys are running them now. What's nice about them is there are always a lot of them, they're cheap, and they are very efficient and can flow I believe up to about 560 hp. That should be more than enough to get your truck into the 12's.
76s30
using the stock turbo manifold would be easiest. The h1c, hx35, hy35 all bolt right on. hang out on the z31 forums (not that this isn't a great place) but theres more people there runing budget built v30et's, many pushing 500+ whp.
