auxilary
ok, i sportsterized my 91/30 mosin nagant. cool. ati monte carlo stock sits and feels well. i got an ati scope mount, weaver rail, and a scope. the instructions called for drilling and tapping the barrell end (not the part affected by the firing process/chamber) I did. Except that I messed up a tad and the scope is askewed by about 1.5 degrees, so it sits cockeyed. How do I go about fixing this and redrilling? The barrell is just steel, can I have the holes filled in, ground flush, and redrill/tap? The issue is that new holes will partially overlay the old holes... would that be a problem with a filler from say, a tig? Thanks -alex
TheNeedForZ
The scope mount is a cantilever and with the two screw holes closer together than the usual. When the two holes are really close it is really easy for anyone to get the alignment crooked. If you were to do it again it still might not be straight. 1.5 degree(90 MOA) is too much for the scope to compensate for. If it were my gun I wouldn't be comfortable putting a lot of heat on the receiver ring or the barrel. I'd shim(offset) the ring base to see if I can get away with it without dinging the scope tube. If you don't want to mar the scope by offset, you'd have to use a set of rings that can rotate at the base. The problem with rotary rings is they can only be used with their own bases. You might have to look around for a ring that fits your rail. What rail is on the ATI? Weaver style?

warrenHLS3083301
cant you drill the hole bigger then glue in a steel dowel then re drill the hole, or does it need to be strong?
auxilary
needforz: great advice, I think I will do just that. the rail is a weaver type rail. i will try slotting the holes on the mount - it's aluminum, should be easy. not sure why i didn't think of it myself
Z-TARD
I've welded on the receiver of a Mauser, so far it still maintains a tight chamber headspace, so I don't think the heat affected the steel enough to weaken it. Using TIG on about 50-60 amps with .030" mig wire as filler would probably work. Be prepared for lots of cosmoline to ooze out from between the barrel and receiver Slotting the mount will probably also work, just be sure to use plenty of locktite on the mounting screws to prevent it from shifting around under recoil later on. auxilary
good idea on locktite too although, no cosmoline here: i cleaned it quite well.
jt1
Aux, when you get the holes slotted enough to put the mount where you want it, degrease the mount and action and use some epoxy on the mount when you put it on. Use a toothpick to clean up the epoxy that's squeezed out aroung the edges. Along with some locktite on the screws, it will never move.
