Replacing the strut

Recommended Posts

Hey guys...my drivers side suspension has been bottoming out and has progressively gotten worse. I'm planning on replacing the strut. I have never done anything like this before so I need some advice. Do's and dont's etc. I know I need to get a spring compressor...

If you could pull this off yourself you would save a lot of cash on the labor end. Just be very careful with the spring compressors. I have never tried using a set of those little compressors that you tighten down with a wrench but I have used a spring compressor like the ones that shops have.

I didn't have a problem when I changed my struts out on the machine but there was a group of guys that apparently had the spring in the compressor wrong and it went flying across the shop!

It narrowly missed hitting one them in the chest, it probably would have killed the guy or seriously hurt him at the least. So be very careful with these things.

I had layed it all out in this post for a early 240Z then realized you have a ZX and I know nothing about they're front suspension. Sorry bout that..

I guess I'm lucky as I have a fellow Z nut that lives accross from us. He offered to do it for free but I didn't want to come in looking like a complete tard not knowing how to do these things. I think I know enough to give him a hand but it will be a learning experience for me. I've heard horror stories about the spring...I'll make sure to stand faaaar away just in case lol.

I did it without a spring compreser on my zx 2+2 i had. bonk.gif This is not safe and the spings are probably softer on the 2+2. Any way I undid all the top bolts on the strut while the car was on the ground and then jacked the car up untill they were lose. This worked on the front and back for my zx. I tryed it on other cars and it didnt work. Needed a spring compreser. For the price you guys pay for tools I would buy a compresser pronto.
