Need help, Master cylinder... Need help asap

Recommended Posts

Ok, like an idiot, I decided to do my rear disc conversion AND replace the master cylinder today....

I got the rear brake discs and what not on after 4 or so hours, and figured, "it's getting late, but the master should be no problem"

I DIDNT bleed the rear brakes before removing the old master.

I DIDNT bench bleed the master.(have a little vacuum pump and didnt think i would have to.)

I put the master on(had to replace one of the lines that goes to the master which was a bitch) and then hooked the vacuum pump to one of the bleeder screws for the master...... 10 minutes later, I'm still getting air bubbles....

So i decided I'd try to bleed all the air out of the lines by bleeding the rear brakes..... 10 minutes later.... still no fluid coming out... and fluid level in the master is still the same.....

So i decided... something is wrong, and started pumping the brake pedal.

The engine is not in the car. And the brake booster vacuum line is not connected to anything but the booster itself. I heard hissing and then that "baby vomit" air and fluid sound..... fluid was spraying out of the booster's vacuum line..... which i'm pretty F***ing sure shouldnt be happening...

I remeber that when i pulled the old master out, the peice that is inside the booster had green stuff, which looked like algea(i cant spell right now) growing on it.. not sure what it was.

the fluid lever in the master did drop when i was pumping the pedal... i dont know if it was going into the lines or out the booster... but the pedal was very firm, infact, almost hard to press down....

I spent 3 hours at the post office trying to get my passport... then i came home and messed with the rear disc conversion... and now this. I'm just about to take a hammer to the car and push it into the woods...

I dont know if i just got a defective master off the shelf, or if the booster is messed up... or both.... but any help as soon as possible would be very much appreciated.

It sounds like you were pumping air into the master cylinder, not sucking it out. Could you have hooked up the vacuum pump incorrectly? That would explain how brake fluid got into your booster, which usually only happens with an old master cylinder with bad seals. The firmness you now feel is probably because you lost the rubber reaction disk inside the brake booster. You'll probably have to remove the booster to shake it out.

Don't feel bad. This stuff happens. Ask me how I know. The best thing is to take a break and come back later.

well... actually... the fluid could have come from the old master... it was leaking pretty bad... i guess now i know where...

As for the vacuum pump... it only sucks, doesnt blow... so i dont think that is the case.... but I'm not 100% sure, I'm kinda running out of time tonight to work on it.... and anyway, forza 2 just came out today and I'm already driving a 240Z on there(god that game is awesome.

I appreciate you're quick response, I'm gonna go fiddle with it for another hour or so... but i'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to fix it tonight....

If anyone else has any ideas what could be going on, i would very much appreciate any input
