383 240z
I have three sets of strut tubes here. One is from a 72 240, the next is from a late 74 260 and the last is from a 78 280 2+2. The 240's are of a much smaller diameter than the other 2. Which set would be the best set to use for a coil-over set-up on my street/strip project? I would like to use as many off the shelf parts as possiabe I dont have acess to a machine shop on a regular basis Please help!!! Guest Anonymous
Keith, I like the 280 strut housings because I can put a larger diameter insert in there. However, if you want to use a threaded tube longer than 4 inches, you will need to use the 240 housing. The 7 inch threaded tube needs to be machined to a larger diameter to fit the 280 housing. If you are going to use a 4 inch threaded tube, that will fit the 280 housing without machining. Good luck, Mark
Guest Anonymous
Are we talking acme threaded adjusting sleeves to fit over the strut cartridge tube housing for 2 1/2 inch coil over springs to be adjusted by acme threaded adjusting nuts?? Ross c or Mike scca should have the adjusting sleeves in different lengths to fit over the 280 or smaller 240 strut tube. Go with the 280 tubes with a 4 inch or up to 7 inch adjusting sleeve with 10 inch coilovers that will mount on the original spring perch weld bead. Keith Keith, I have the long 280Z tubes and set Mark up with his. Here's an old pic of a 7" 'big-blue' tube. I typically use lower profile top hats than that shown (1/4") to maximize available suspension travel. I think I've got some 8's kicking around too I haven't yet got pics of one I installed on my car but it's a tidy look that'll allow me to run softer 10 or 12" springs over the winter and then back to my 8's for summer fun and max meats/treads Drop me a line with any q's. I'd like to hear an update on how your cars coming along
