Flares! A subject beaten to death already....

Recommended Posts

I've spent a few hours reading flare posts on hybridz, and I only seem to find info on 2 types of flares: MSA street flares and ZG flares. The problem is that both of these might be bigger than I need them to be. The SubtleZ flares are actually remanufactured fenders with wider flares molded in out of steel. The question is, does anyone make those flares separately?

Here's the background story: I got a great deal on a set of 16x8 CCW wheels with Kumho 245/45/16 tires. This weekend I decided to play with suspension settings and lowered my car about 3/4" front, and 1" rear from stock height. I also decided to try out the new wheels, where I ran into several small problems:

1. the front wheels don't clear my calipers, but i can resolve that easily.

2. when front wheels are mounted, the tire sticks out about 1.5" outside the fender, which will definitely rub and pose a problem. I might wind up using a small 5mm or so spacer to move the wheel out just a hair so that it clears the brake, or I might grind away some of the caliper housing. It looks like this:

Borrowing Owen's picture, you can see how much it sticks out.

3. the rear tire aligns well more or less, but on turns rubs the fender - which can probably be cured by rolling the lip.

as you can see, I can't really use big flares - they wouldn't work right and I'd like to have a tucked in look for the tires, and I need to spend as little as possible

few questions:

1. is there a way to extend/stretch/form a new fender bubble by a competent body shop? the guy I bought the car from runs an autobody shop.

2. does anyone make subtle style flares?

Thanks,

-alex

Aux.... You may want to solicit advice from Racer X. MHO.. roll the fender if you lov these wheels and tires and see a long marriage and let a body man fabricate the flares out of steel for a precise custom fit. There was this interesting post a few momths back with pic s of some one building steel flares on a old mustang.
