What's that Mat? You finished your coilovers?

Yup! Finally had time to finish my coilover setup. Been so busy lately, I thought I would never get them done. I had so much fun cutting and welding, it was a blast! I'm a Carpenter by trade, so working with metal is very different for me, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly. Just this last week I had time to blast my suspension bits and prime and paint them. The color shows a little to bright in the pictures, but the effect I was going for is right on. I wanted a deep blue metalic that would look black from a distance, but if you dropped down and looked at the suspension up close, you would see the cool blue metalic color. Now I'm just waiting on my bump stops from MSA and I'm all set to put the suspension bits back on. What sucks is that last night the EVIL SALT TRUCKS came out of hidding and now I can't drive my toy 'till next spring frown.gif .

Mat, sweet looking set up! I am wondering what coil-overs those are? I am in the market for coil-overs and I am looking for some consumer feedback.

 

I have used ground-control in the past and have liked their quality. I just received the struts (Tokicos) this week.

 

Also, how hard was the install? I noticed on ground-control's website they say that installation on early Z cars requires cutting and welding?

 

I noticed you have wheel adapters also. I'd like to see some pics with the coil-overs and wheels on your Z.

Jaime, The coilovers are from Mike Gibson (SCCA). They are good quality and easy to install. I sectioned my struts 1.5" and used 10" 175 lb. springs in the front and 8" 200 lb. springs in the rear. It was a lot of fun to install these. I did have problems getting " the most stuck strut ever " strut cart out and ended up having to buy an entire front suspension off one of our members here, but all in all, the conversion was easy. I also used Tokico 5-way adjustables. I needed some spacers (just some washers) at the bottom of the strut tube to raise the cart to be able to tighten the gland nut down properly.

For my application, I needed to cut and weld, because I sectioned my struts. FYI, it is possible to just place the threaded sleeve on the weld from the original spring perch and not have to section the strut. The only cutting you would do is cutting off the old lower spring perch. IMO, I guess you wouldn't have to cut it off, but it may look kinda tacky if you left it on.

About the pictures, yeah I would like to see the coilovers and my 17"'s on my car also ;) , but I haven't put the suspension back on my car yet. I'm still waiting for my bumpstops from MSA to complete the conversion. I will post pics when I get it all done, hopefully sometime in the near future, but I'm in no rush to fully complete my Z, for the stupid salt trucks dumped stupid salt on the stupid roads around here frown.gif .

Do not get into such a big rush to get the parts on. Rotate em all on the coffee table as a conversation piece and to impress your friends.Re-edit... I just got my shortenend to 20.5 inch aluminum Corvette drive shaft back today. It is so light that I may just carry it around under my arm for awhile so everyone can get acquainted with my new prize.

Well, when you spend a lot of time on something, you just have to show it off :D . My buddies would get a kick out of me putting the suspension bits out on the coffee table.

Larry, you might start a new fad carrying around that "shortenend to 20.5 inch aluminum Corvette drive shaft". Next thing we know, there will be kids all over the place carrying thier custom parts with them for all to see. I can just see it now, "I don't have me car with me right now, but check out my tripple decker wing that I'm going to install!" :D
