PETEW
I am trying to finish putting my car together and the stupid spindles won't come out. I've tried using WD-40 and a 5lb hammer, an air chisel, etc, and I get nothing. I finally cut the spindles at the A-arm from the strut hoping it was binding at the bushings. WRONG! So I have two rear struts with spindles stuck in them. I am thinking of taking it to a shop to see if a press can push them out. This is the only thing holding me up and it is driving me CRAZY . I don't know what else to do, these things are really stuck. Any help from anyone will be greatly appreciated. I don't mind paying to have them removed, but if I could do it myself it would be nicer. Guest Anonymous
Pete are you talking about the strut pins on the rear suspension? If you are this requires a special strut pin removal tool, faith, prayer, patience and extreme luck to get out. I believe a HYbrid member by the name of Dan Betha markets the strut pin removal tool that I used. Do a search on "strut pin removal tool". You may have to take the parts to a machine shop to get the pieces out. I cannot imagine anyone removing these original installed pins on the old Z without the strut pin removal tool. johnc
Take them to a shop with a 20 ton press, pay them $20 and your problem is solved.
PETEW
OK, so I'm dumb and missed that they are supposed to be pulled with a special tool. I took them to the shop and they should be done tommorrow. How about putting the new spindles in. Do they go in easily, or is there something special to putting in the new ones? Thanks. Guest Anonymous
After I managed to get the pins out.. I buffed them to a "chrome" finish to remove the source of frustration that held them fast..microscopic rust in selected spots.. Use a little lubrication place a spare nut cap over the threads and gently persuade em back in with any force handy. Tap Tap Tap
deMideon
When I redid mine I had rust in the other sections too! So I went out and got a 12 gauge shotgun cleaning tool (wire brush). Hooked it up to my drill and ran it through a few times with cleaning fluid. Cleaned up all of the rust inside and the new ones slid in easily!!
