Guest furrybarry
Hello you crazy seppos and other nationalities. I'm trying to revive this thread 'cause I'm doing what bob says not to Don't even bother. First' date=' it is possible to physically transfer the AWD setup and graft the suspension. A compentent fabrication shop can make that happen. However, the Skyline has what is called the ATTESSA system to control the clutches to send power to the front wheels,(it does not work like a typical 4wd setup, for the front recieves no power until the rears start slipping, then the ATTESSA system starts to engage the clutches,(3 or 4), to start sending power to the front wheels, up to an even 50-50 split). There are several ATTESSA sensors throughout the Skyline GT-R, and it also takes info from the stock computer. So it is not an easy fix, and the sensors are located in various parts of the car, and are calibrated for that location,(refering to G-sensors, etc..). Plus the wheel sensors. -Bob[/quote'] Yep, the electronics are a nightmare, but I'm going to use all of the stock stuff. The G sensor is located right in the middle of the track and wheelbase. It's output can be messed around with either with adapters from HKS or something like this: http://autospeed.drive.com.au/A_0060/cms/article.html. The atessa computer is separate (in the boot or "trunk") and the hydraulic pumps to lock up the centre clutch pack to drive the fronts are located on the rear crossmember with diff, brakes sensors etc. This crossmember has been stuck under z's before with minimal mods. The next stop in the job is that the manuals are only written in Japanese. So you will have a heck of a time deciphering the electrical schematics to determine which wire goes where, assuming you could get all the sensors mounted properly. -Bob Australia got factory delivered R32 GTR's to homologate for Group A racing and also factory manuals in english. Easy to find as PDF on ebay. Also I've tagged the electical spaghetti as I pulled it from the donor car. Now there is a second options, but it is very expensive, and is only for drag racing. HKS or one of the Japanese companies sells a kit that allows you to pump a lever,(like a hand brake), to manually engage the clutches. That is what the 240 in the magazine article has. Notice the big silver handle? You also need to eliminate the 4 wheel steering, or HICAS in the rear,(fairly straight forward). -Bob Yeah. The Japanese thing also has an air shifted drag trans and monster hi mount twins. Bottom line? If you are going to transplant the RB26dett' date=' go with the RB25 RWD transmission and don't worry about AWD. There is a very good reason there are only 2 or 3 of them in the world...-Bob[/quote'] My pan for number four in the world is to also shift the front diff mount forward in the sump either by cutting and shutting the standard casting or fabricating a new one. This will allow the motor to be back against the firewall. Better weight distribution (especially given the shorter wheelbase) and better clearance should result. Any suggestions, kind words or abuse are welcome.
tannji
Wasnt there someone else doing this as recently as last year? I seem to recall a guy saying he was doing this, and was in the process of cutting a car in half lengthways to add width.... Interesting, but a bit too extreme for me, I would be thinking about a Subaru STI swap with big turbo instead...
olie05
Furry bary, if you take on the swap, please keep us updated because there seems to be a lack of documentation on the other rb awd z's.
dsommer
You guys want to know who is going to cut the car in half lengthwise. Haha I know!!! His name is Vince, scratch your head for a moment and think carbon fiber... Yep VintageZtech. He told me he's so busy lately traveling and working on the CF stuff he hasn't had time to do any work on his project. Anyway that's who it is. Guest ON3GO
ya vince has been doing this project and planning for over a year now EASY. prob alot more. he cant talk about it to much because of a few reasons but when its all done he will show pictures and info. i must say his parts list he has is INSANE! and what he is doing is also insane. and when you see the times he is going to put out with this car your gonna go insane. mike
tannji
anything over 9.5 seconds in that car would be tame..... = )
cygnusx1
You might want to take a look at the drivetrain from an early BMW 325IX. That may offer a better fitment in a Z than the Skyline...a big MAYBE. A Subaru setup is VERY compact and might work too.
Guest PROJECTRB240SX
Has Anyone Tried A Subaru Wrx Tranny? The Early Ones Are Full Awd With No Electronic Interference, I Know Subaru Uses Alot Of Nissan Parts And The Last Time I Looked At One Its Looks Like A 4cyl Nissan Bellhousing, And I Distinctly Remember Seeing A Sr20det Attached To One In And Older Option Magazine. Just Food For Thought And It Would Make A Cool Conversion For The Z Seeing As It Has A Long Engine Bay.
Guest furrybarry
no worries OLIE05. Work leaves no time for love, turning grapes into booze this time of year in Aus. Progress on the Z is documented but slow. Will post when something worthy occurs. Currently I'm badgering TOMEI about what type of mods have been done to my inherited RB26 engine and computer. Found an HKS twin plate clutch and a Cusco 1.5 way LSD through tinkering so far.
Guest furrybarry
Has Anyone Tried A Subaru Wrx Tranny? Not that i can think of. The wrx thing is a transaxle isn't it? trans and diff in the same alloy casting. Tricky to shift the axle line maybe. WRX boxes are not known as the strongest either, even behind mild EJ20's. Guest PROJECTRB240SX
Sort Of, The Subaru Trannies Look Like The Old Porsche And Vw Trannies Just With A Tailshaft Output For A Rear Drive Shaft..... Thats Why Its Would Be Good To Do It With A V6 Or 4 Cyl.
Russ
Any more news on this topic? I started the thread years ago, would be nice to see one pic of something Keep up the good work
