ZR8ED
Ok here is topic I've not seen discussed. How does larger rear tire width affect handling.. either street use or track. I'm talking Wide tires. I'm running 225's out front, 265 out back. Not that wide in the back I know, but I have lots of flare to fill, and I want to go wider. More for looks.. It looks like I'm going to end up switching to custom made 17" rims to get the width I need as well as keeping the overall diameter under 26". I'm planning on a 315/35/17 in the rear and possibly a 235/35/17 out front. (ya they will fit... even without coilovers! How will this large rear tire affect my cornering, as well as overall grip, and street highway handling/stability. As long as it is not worse, I'm ok with it.. Like I said I want the looks.. not neccessarily more traction... my 265 Victoracer 700's are wicked for hooking up! The car doesn't feel "darty" on the highway now.. will it later? Thanks. johnc
Well... More then likely you'll see understeer at the limit unless there are problems getting the rear tires hot. That 315/35-17 tire is a common front size for a racing Viper. Its a heavy wheel and tire combination (40 lbs total with Hoosier R3S02 and 50 lbs total with Michelin Pilots) for a 240Z so you better run springs at least 200 lb. in. in the rear with some Tokico Illuminas. This will force you to run the same shock up front and spring rates around 150 to 175.
ZR8ED
50lbs? ouch. So much for weight reduction.. As far as suspension goes.. I'm right in the spring range now.. (maybe a bit higher) I have the illuminas in the car now.. though I want the adjustables in the back to stiffen it up a touch more. Understeer huh?.. hmm this could lean me slightly more to the other side of the neutral "feel".. Mine is pretty neutral feeling now..the front goes so well around corners, I'm sure the car will oversteer at its limits currently (haven't pushed it enough on the track to find out this season.) Not real happy with the unsprung weight...it probably won't be all that noticeable .. maybe after some serious track time..I guess I should weigh my wheels, so I can get a before/after idea of changes.. Been looking seriously at the compomotive site with the 5 star rims (avail in 4 lug)
