Pedal goes to floor after installing toyota 4x4 calipers

Recommended Posts

Helping a friend out on the toyota 4x4 fronts and 280zx rear discs on his 280z. After installing and bleeding everything the pedal goes to the floor. The rears seem to be getting decent pressure to them but the fronts aren't wanting to grab too good. Seems like I remember reading that this upgrade may require a zx turbo master cylinder but can't remember for sure. Anyone run into this problem?

Besides air in your master or calipers.....he could have a caliper piston seal leak...at least one 4x4 customer has struggled thru a similar situation and it turned out the one caliper (cheap one from local auto shop he got) had a bad rebuild and was leaking like a sieve. Took him a while to notice it...even my massive front Xtreme's and rear CNC disk setup don't require a master change, you have more pedal travel but it's still within a reasonable range such that an MC change is optional.

To find out which side , maybe both, clamp off the rubber brake line gently with a pair of vice grips not a lot of pressure is needed or you will damage the insides of the hose. When you have clamped both sides on the fronts feel the pedal travel, if it is good and hard than get someone to release one of the grips while pressing firmly on the pedal to see how far the pedal travels. If the pedal falls alot, more than an inch, than that caliper has a leak or air in it. While the bleeder screw is open and not touching the pedal at all lightly rap on the side of the caliper and watch for air bubbles to come out. If air comes out than keep it up until you are confident that it has finished. You should do one side while the other is clamped if the other side has a poor pedal feel when it is unclamped. Also when done be sur ethe rear pads are adjusted up so there is some drag with no pedal pressure. The rear directly affects the pedal feel and height far more than the fronts unless the fronts have a problem. Make sure the fluid coming out is as new clarity as well to ensure the old fluid in the caliper doesn't contaminate the system. Hope this helps!!! Z ON DOOD!! cheers.gifcheers.gif
