JSM
I have questions on some wires from a 73 240z. I looked at the wiring diagram from this post and my smashed 240z I have still electrically intact and determined the following (I think), please correct if wrong: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=100402 Coil Wires 1=Resistor (wire appears black) 2=Green / White – Other side of resistor 3=Black - Neg Side of Coil 4=Black / white – Positive side of coil Dist/Therm wires 5=Black - ?? I think this was a ground on the distributor? 6=Yellow - Thermostat 7=Green - ???? No ideas either 8= Back / Yellow - ?? This may actually black and white but picking up color from the yellow. Where does this go? Points on the distributor? My New car has a MSD coil and MSD 6AL wired through a newer 280zx electronic distributor. All the wires above were hanging off the new car. Tach is not working nor the thermostat. The smashed 240z has a newer 280zx electronic distributor with a stock coil and all the wires are hooked up except for 5, 7 & 8. For the new car, I was thinking to hook up #6 to the therm and #4 to positive side of coil to get my tach working. 4 is the tach wire correct? That gets +12 from the coil correct, not giving +12 to the coil? And #3 is not needed for the tach to work correct? I don’t have to go through the 6AL to get the tach to work, but I think that is an option it has? Can someone tell me what wires #5, 7, and #8 are for? Just for knowledge at least? Six_Shooter
I'll come back later and study this some more, but wanted to ask and mention this: Are you using or still have the stock '73 tach in the car? The '73 tach, is a voltage triggered tach, where the positive side of the coil coil is fed through the tach. When changing to a different ignition system, most swappers seem to swap to the later points triggered tach. I know the 280Z uses a points trigger tach (I'm getting one from a '78). I don't recall what year this changed. I have seen some install instructions on using the original tach with an MSD ignition system. This was on zhome.com. http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/ThomasMSD.htm'>http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/ThomasMSD.htm There are a few other ignition articles as well, under the "How-tos" menu. http://www.zhome.com
JSM
Thanks. Yes it is the original 73 tach.
